ASEAN-India car rally

The day was 25th November when a contingent of 31 vehicles were flagged off from from the city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia with the objective of forging new opportunities of trade ties among the ASEAN countries. The rallyists opened the door to the ASEAN countries to fruitfully use the 8000 km route to foster new economic tie. The morning of 16th December saw thousands of enthusiastic people gathering on the both side of National Highway 39 to catch a glimpse of the much awaited India Asean Car rally. The rally arrived at Rangajan Tini Ali on NH-39 at around 10 am and the cheering crowd weaving colourful flags of the different ASEAN nations greeted the rallyists from where they headed to NRL Township for a stopover.



The Golaghat Dist. Administration in association with NRL authority welcomed them in a traditional assamese way with a “Gamusa” and a rose. It was followed by a lunch of exquisite assamese cuisine which was accompanied by showcase of assamese culture and folk art bihu and jhoomur. “I was very much excited on being a part of the rally for the first time and we had shown the way and now it is upto the respective governments how to make the best use of this route.” Nou Maneth Athana, a participant of the rally and a reporter with Cambodia News Channel, said in her interaction with AssamTimes.



This time there were eight women participants in the rally including 3 from India, 2 from Singapore, 1 from Cambodia and 2 from Myanmar. Karlo De Guzman, a participant from Phillipines shared his excitement to Assamtimes by saying that when they entered into Indian territory they received a message on their vehicle’s radio from the chairman of the Mahindra group who hailed them as a new columbuses and welcomed to India, which meant a lot to them. For William, a participant from Singapore, the rally ended on a positive note and the respective govts had made impeccable arrangements which had made the journey a memorable one and for the first time in his life he felt as if he was driving like a head of a state. After the one hour stopover at NRL Township, the rally leaves for the ceremonial flag down at Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati.

Brihattar Golaghat Nagar Rongali Bihu Sanmilan underways

Golaghat is drenched in the Bihu festivity and the the Brihattar Golaghat Nagar Rongali Bihu Sanmilan has added to the festive spirit of the people. Ganja recovered at Numaligarh, 3 arrested

Numaligarh Police and ASRF, acting on a tip-off on Wednesday morning at around 5.30 am, recovered 200 kg of GANJA valuing over crore in the international market from a truck bearing registration No. JK-02/AH-7965. Police stopped the truck at the Numaligarh check-post and seized the ganja which were hidden under a pile of coal. The accused were identified as Surinder Sarma (45), Fakrul Islam (29) and Md. Sahabuddin (26), all hails from Jammu & Kashmir. The consignment was headed from Uriamghat to Jammu & Kashmir.

Golaghat goes to poll today

After incessant rain for the last two to three days, today the sun smiles, much for the relief of the contesting candidates and the voters of the Golaghat dist. The voting turnout percentage of the four legislative constituencies are as Golaghat LAC 68%, Khumtai LAC 73%, Sarupathar LAC 70% and Bokakhat LAC 75%. It is noteworthy that the anti-incompetency factor of the ruling govt. plays an important role in this election. Now only time will tell how much the opposition parties will be able to take the advantage of this anti-incompetency factor. The fate of the candidates were sealed in the EVMs till May 13.

Tragic road accident claims 3 at Golaghat

In a major road accident in Pulibor Chariali of Golaghat district, 3 people lost their lives and 3 were critically injured. The accident took place at around 6 p.m. of 18th March. Trailokya Konwar 32, and Rekha Konwar, 28, both husband and wife were on their way back home on a scooter when they were mowed down by a speeding 407 mini truck. Both were died on the spot. After mowing them the truck crashed into the boundary wall of a house resulted into the death of one Mrs. Das (50). The injured were rushed to Golaghat Civil Hospital. The driver of the vehicle fled the spot.

Murder in Nambor forest: dead body recovered

Dead body of Ashim Dhar(34) who was gone missing from 4th March was recovered from Nambor Reserve Forest in a decomposed state. Mr. Dhar who was a inhabitant of Sukanjan in Karbi Anglong district, has been working in a tax consultancy firm in Golaghat town. Home Guard jawan arrested for stealing pistol

Golaghat Police today arrested a Home Gurad Jawan named Naren Gogoi for stealing a 9 MM Pistol. Naren Gogoi who has been working in Golaghat District Court’s Prosecuting Inspector’s office for the last two years, stole a 9 MM Pistol from the evidence room of the Prosecuting Inspector’s office a few days back. Yesterday a team of Golaghat Police raided his residence at Chandmari area of Golaghat town and recovered the pistol.
