Escalating tension in Haflong; curfew on


Tension still grips Haflong town on Friday. The prohibitory order was also discontinued in view of the withdrawal of the Dima Hasao bandh called jointly by the North Cachar Hills Indigenous Peoples' Forum and its students and women wings.


Curfew was imposed following violence during a 48-hour bandh called by the NCHIPF to press for bifurcation of Dima Hasao district into two autonomous districts.

Assam Government has requested the Central Government to revive the Brahmaputra Board to prevent floods and erosion. Three persons of a family were burnt to death following a gas cylinder explosion in Sonitpur district on Sunday. The gas cylinder exploded on Sunday afternoon at Darwanpatty area in Tezpur town killing a woman, a 15-month-old girl child and a youth while the owner of the house, Ashutosh Ghosh, was severely burnt. Ghosh's wife Archana Ghosh, daughter and another relative Bapon Ghosh died in the fire while he was admitted to Kanaklata Civil Hospital. Moreover, 6houses were gutted in the fire.
A husband killed his wife before surrendering at a sub divisional magistrate’s court on Saturday.The incident took place in Hojai at around 12 noon when Bhuban Das beheaded his wife Phulmoti Das with a sharp dao inside a tea stall in the court premises. He later surrendered before the court. Both Bhuban and Phulmoti came to the court a few days after Phulmoti registered a case against her husband.
Altogether eight people were killed and several others have been injured at a tragic a road mishap in Nagaon district on Saturday. The mishap took place when a Tata magic carrying a group of youth Congress activist lost control when the vehicle arrived in Chakarigaon in the district at around 12 noon. Five died on the spot while three succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The injured activists have been rushed to the hospital.

Stages are set to hoist the Guwahati International Film Festival from Sunday in Guwahati. The event is set to end on February 11. The death toll in Azara train accident has gone up to three while several others are battling for life at the GMCH on Friday. One person died on the spot while two others died on the way to the GMCH. The accident took place when a Guwahati-bound passenger train rammed into a bulldozer in the morning. Five coaches went off the tracks while four other coaches overturned under the impact.
