Assam Rifles flood relief teams were deployed in Assam, Sonitpur District on Saturday & Sunday to rescue hundreds of people marooned by flood water of Brahmaputra River as the overall flood situation turned critical due to heavy rain for past one week. Flood water affected approximately 22 villages including 30,000 civilians due to breach in an embankment on the river. DC Sonitpur, accordingly requisitioned for assistance.
Two columns of 12 Assam Rifles were pressed into providing flood relief to the affected villages. By 23 Sep 2012 approximately 4000 civilian were rescued using boats. Food packets were also air dropped to assist the marooned people. Medical teams also provided immediate medical aid to victims. Assam Rifles is closely working with the civil administration of Sonitpur district to provide immediate relief & rescue operation. A flood relief camp has been established at Sootea near Balipukhri for the victims.
