The School of Journalism, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (USA) in association with Guwahati Press Club has organised a two-day media workshop for mid career journalists on strengthening media professionalism and the NGO-media interface in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for HIV/AIDS coverage. The workshop, to be held at Guwahati Press Club, will begin on January 4.
The workshop will include joint sessions for all participants together including one headed by a Guwahati physician who is expert in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and breakout sessions specifically for journalists, journalism educators and Non-Governmental Organizations.
The programme will be led by two American faculty members (James D. Kelly and Jyotika Ramaprasad) with experience in print and television journalism, photojournalism, and social marketing communication campaigns. James Kelly has worked for the Associated Press and for the South Bend (Indiana) Tribune newspaper and is Associate Professor at Indiana University. Similarly Jyotika Ramaprasad has worked on communication campaigns for international agencies including Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok, Thailand and is Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University.
The workshop will comprise only seven journalists, who will be given certificates of completion at the end of the workshop. More and more serious allegations seemed to have surfaced against MLA Jiten Gogoi. The independent MLA from Bokakhat allegedly unleashed terror at the residence of an AGP leader on Friday. According to information, the surrendered ULFA rebel went to the yard of AGP leader Girin Gogoi on Friday evening and warned that he would shoot him dead. Not only that an angry Gogoi unleashed terror with blank-firing before leaving the spot. The reason is yet to be ascertained. The incident took place a day after police registered a case against Gogoi charging him with assaulting a woman who undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Golaghat organized a self help group mela at the New Jail Market, Golaghat. As many as 30 nos. of SHGs of different development blocks of the district took part in the event. The main object of the mela was to promote the Assamese traditional items made by different SHG groups during the festival time.
Thirteen activists of two underground organizations of Assam have formally laid down arms to Manipur Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh at the Mantripukhri head-quarters of IGAR (South) on Wednesday.
