12-hour Goalpara bandh today

Eight organizations, including the Goalpara district units of AASU, ARSU, ABSU, ABYF and Sikshak Samanay Samiti, have called a 12-hour Goalpara district bandh on Wednesday from 6 am in protest against the killing of the two teachers – Kameswar Rabha and Sarit Rabha – after their alleged abduction by the suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA). Almost 47 days since the two were abducted, their bodies were recovered from Kasumari Pahar near Krishnai on June 30. The organizations have demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of each of the deceased.

As many as twelve shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out at the market near NH 37 at Dudhnoi town in Goalpara District in the early hours on Friday. The fire that started accidentally in a cloth store quickly spread to ten other neighbouring shops before amassing a huge part of the market. Eight persons were killed and 40 others injured, ten of them critically, when a bus collided with a 10-wheeler truck at Rangjuli in Goalpara district on Monday. Police, Indian Army of 9th Sikhli Regiment and medical emergency personnel rushed to the spot to rescue the injured. The speeding bus, bearing no.
