PWD engineers and contractor beaten by flood affected people

The irate flood affected people of Ranthali near Kalaigaon town physically assulted PWD officials of Udalguri Division namely Harekrishna Sarma,Asstt. Engineer; Tilak Sarma JE and one PWD contractor Hemchandra Daimari at 8.30 AM on June 28 near a flood damaged bridge at Ranthali. People also pushed down all the vehicles of the officials and contractors (one Maruti Alto, one Maruti 800 and one Honda Glamour bike) in to the deep flood water.


According to information the construction of RCC bridge at Gerua at the cost of Rs.6,42,89033/- on six and half KM long Ojagaon -Kalaigaon PWD road had started on November 26, 2008. But only twenty percent of the work has been completed during these three years, causing misery to people of several villages. The recent flood in Kalaigaon Revenue Circle nearly damaged the temporary weak foot bridge.Even the incomplete RCC bridge developed a few cracks. The stranded people including students started gathering at the site since morning of June 28. When the officials and contractors had arrived at the site irate people started arguing with them resulting the incident. Irate people also gheraod Pabitra Kumar Das, BDO, Kalaigaon who had arrived at the site half an hour later. All the injured officials and contractor had been hospitalised.

In another tragic incident a 40 years old wild makhna elephant has been eletrocuted near SSB camp at Samrang in Udalguri district in the night of October 24. According to information the elephant died on spot after it had come in to contact of loosely erected un authorised electric wires. All such loose electric lines have been causing threat to wild elephants as well as people. So far four wild elephants lost lives in Udalguri district in 2014.

In a very tragic incident wild elephants killed Karlina Shal (55) and her daughter Jyoti Shal (7) last night at Deepa basti village near Kundarbil at around 2.30 am on September 7. On the other hand two of her grandsons were also injured by the wild herd. It was a national news when 7 elephants were mowed down by a high speed goods train on the 23rd of September 2010 in the 'Elephant Corridors' of North Bengal. Army deployed in Udalguri district have nabbed one hard-core ULFA militant at Tangla during evening hours on August 19. Acting on a tip-off the Army troops from Borrengajuli camp launched a joint operation with the police in which a listed ULFA cadre was apprehended.The operation took place near the busy market place of Tangla. The arrested cadre has been identified as Khagen Deka (45).One 7.65 mm revolver and two live ammunition have been recovered from the apprehended militant.
