A string of group clash that leaves twelve people dead, as many as one hundred people injured has forced the authority to clamp curfew in the city on Saturday. The condition of thirty is reported to be critical.

The violence began as soon as the Advasi people in large numbers were holding a rally demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the community.

The Adivasi protesters damaged as many as 150 vehicles while these were plying in the Beltola areas. Moreover, some of them vandalized some shops and markets in the area.

The angry people in general retaliated by attack and the clash left 5 people to death.

The city police sprung into action and dispersed the Adivasi people from the protest rally site. But another group further proceeded to the Khanapara areas and then to Ganeshguri areas to stop the city buses.

The public in general got angry with these Adivasi students leaders and retaliated with attack. As many as ten Adivasi students have fallen injured. The injured people have been rushed to the hospital.

The entire Beltola area has come under curfew from 12 noon. The over all situation has yet to be quelled.

The news item is rather painful. From what I gather from eye-witnesses and other sources, a protest rally of the Adivasi Assamese was resisted by police from proceeding towards Assam Assembly. The rally turned violent, whether by agent-provocateurs or in spontaneity that I do not yet know, resulting in damage to vehicles and other properties. Then a clash ensued between the protesters and the people of that area leaving several dead and more grievously injured. Without doing a whodunit we may infer another schism that may lead to further diminishing of the people identifying themselves as Assamese. Some of the eyewitnesses ( of them few have lost their cars to the violence) have told me that the Adivasis may have damaged cars, other properties and carried out excesses, but in terms of deaths and bodily injuries they have taken the brunt. The riff raff that indulge in all kinds of mischief and anti-social activities in that area had a field day killing and maiming with glee. It is painful, as a civil servant has put it succinctly, that these innocent people, naive to the deceit and sophistry of the privileged ones, have always suffered since the days of Mahabharata. .... whether as Ekalavya, whether as destitute of mega-dams, whether as refugees of Bodoland movement and now in the streets of Guwahati. I listen to the news with forebodings.

Yesterdays incident has really shocked me. Impartial of being a tribe I wholly condemn both side for this unfortunate event.Whatever I have came to know is from the electronic media and considering that as an apparent fact I would comment tribesmen ensued the clash. But it is also true that the local resident, most of them are non adivasis, vent their ire and a long cherished hatred attitude toward adivasis in a gory and beastly way. Unfortunately the local adminstration played the role of mute spectator. The tribesmen who had been involved in vandalism invite punishment but it is not certainly the way. It will distance people from each other. The looser will be tribal community. Rather than inviting support for the cause the incident has unfotunate event. For the God's sake, if anyone is reading this please don't let this happen again.

This is really very paniful and disgusting aswell. What ever I learnt is only through the Electronic media. Its really shocking that even today we witness these barbaric acts. I believe every problem has a solution lest its a problem.

Senior officer missing near KNP

A senior official of a Chennai-based firm has been missing since Sunday from near Kaziranga National Park. According to police, Ganapat Kumar, a project engineer of Afcon Infrastructure, went missing while he was on his way back to his official residence in the city. KPLT frees Rabha and Baruah in Karbi Anglong

In a major sigh of relief, suspected KPLT militants have freed Chief Conservator of Forest Abhijit Rabha and Range Officer Ranjan Barua in Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday. The duo were freed near a highway at Bokolia in the hills district on Monday midnight. Police rescued them in the wee hours before being taken to a hospital in Diphu for treatment. The abductors had reportedly demanded a ransom of one crore rupee as ransom. The duo were kidnapped on Sunday when they were returning from Sighasan Hills where they had gone with a 60-member delegation, including some Japanese botanists to conduct a forest department survey.

AMU like varsity in Assam: Dr Sarma

An Aligarh Muslim University-like varsity is likely to be set up in Assam. But the Centre must approve the proposal Dispur sent to Delhi recently. Disclosing this on the floor of the Assam Assembly on Tuesday, education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the proposal was made to Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal recently during his visit to Delhi. If the proposal is given the go-ahead, Assam would have a university on the lines of Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia, which have been granted the status of minority university.

MASS opposes NCTC in Assam

The Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti on Tuesday urged the Assam government to emulate the chief ministers of West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Tamil Nadu and oppose the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC). MASS general secretary Dilip Patgiri told said that the proposed NCTC is against the federal structure of the Indian constitution and there is no need for creation of such a body. He said that Assam did not require any draconian law as most of the militant and separatist groups have come ahead for negotiations with the government.

Kidnapped duo released

Chief Conservator of Forests Abhjit Rabha and Ranger Ranjan Baruah were released unharmed at about 1030 hrs IST near Bokoliaghat Forest Range Office last night. What first appeared to be a rumour was confirmed by Bakoliaghat Police. The duo were found approaching Bakoliaghat by forest patrolmen in the morning and brought to the Bakoliaghat Range Office. Superintendent of Police B.B Chetry rushed to Bakoliaghat and escorted them back to Diphu Civil Hospital. Injured leopard rescued in Guwahati

Leopards are still unleashing terror in among the residents of Guwahati. Local residents in Maligaon area rescued full grown leopard on Sunday. The full grown leopard was spotted at a deep gorge in Gotanagar in the morning and rescue it. Later, it was handed over to the forest officials.

No let-up in Lepetkota

Normal functionings at the Lepetkota gas cracker project have come to a grinding halt following the workers protest over the CISF firing where one worker died and three others injured. A high level meeting of the Gas cracker officials, district administration failed to break the logjam. On the other hand, Dibrugarh district ATTSA has called for 12 hour district bandh on Monday in protest against the incident.

NEEPCO tower damaged in explosion

A NEEPCO owned power transmission tower damaged in Sivasagar district on Sunday when ULFA’S Paresh Baruah faction exploded a powerful bomb. Three IEDs, weighing nearly a kg, were planted on the power transmission tower and one of them exploded in the morning. The other two IEDs were later defused by the army bomb squad. The tower transmits electricity from Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited's Lakwa Thermal Power Station at nearby Maibella.

Dispur waiting for Centre’s nod to launch offensive

Dispur is waiting for Centre’s clearance to carry out joint operations with Arunachal Pradesh against Maoists. Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Choudhury said in Jorhat that they had sent reports to the Union Home Ministry and were waiting for its nod to flush out Maoists along with Arunachal Pradesh government from the area. He said the Maoists were also working with some over ground organisations for fresh recruitment and extortion drive in certain areas of upper Assam.
