Arsenic which is formed in heavy quality in the ground level water of Sivasagar and Nazira makes the people worry. Now the Govt. is trying to create awareness among the people and take some preventive measures.
Under the guidelines of ‘National Rural Drinking water quality monitoring and survillance programme the Public Health and Enginerring Department of Sivasagar and Nazira is conducting a few awareness camps in different places.
At Santak and Bihubor where two water project were sealed by the PHED Nazira for presence of heavy quantity of arsenic. Govt. is now planning to setup a arsenic -tretment plant there.

Stone quarries are illegally operating at Bihubor under Nazira sub-division. Bihubor is famous for its stone reserves and most of Upper Assam is dependent on it. The State Forest Department earn crores of rupees from Bihubor stone quarries annually. With the help of a few forest officials two influential businessmen illegally set up 2 stone quarries at Bihubor. The quarries run without legal permits and required settlement permissions at the behest of the forrest officials. More so the businessmen duo extract stones by digging as deep as 60 ft by the River Dikhow.
After heavy campagin and war of words among different political parties, the first phase of panchayat poll held peacefully in Nazira with over 60% turn out to decide the fate of 14 Zila Parishad candidates, 68 Gaon Panchayat presidents, 68 Anchalik Parishad members and 480 Ward Members of Nazira Anchalik Panchayat. Poet and ex.president of Sivasagar district Xahitya Sabha Kamal Kachari passed away at Maduri, Nazira on January 27. He was 75. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and 2 sons. Different people and organisations condoled in his death.

Congress leader and Nazira MLA Debobrat Saikia gets extortion call from ULFA for Rs 30 lakh in cash. According to information, he received the call on Thursday from a person who identified himself as Rupentor Axom who further threatened to kill him if he fails to pay the amount. Earlier in August 2012, Saikia got the first extortion call from ULFA forcing him to lodge FIR in Simaluguri police station. The son of late chief minister Hiteshwar Saikia repeatedly has been getting extortion call from ULFA even before the panchayat election.
