Mai-Ko-Chum-Phai festival observed at Lakuwa Chola Pathar Shyam Gaon
Mai-Ko-Chum-Phai the traditional religious festival of Tai community of Buddhist religion is observed at Lakuwa Chola pathar Shyam gaon Buddha Vihar of Sivasagar district by the Tai-Khamyang community with day long programme on January 6. This festival is related with the supreme deliverance of lord Buddha. The six clans Ahom, Khamyang, Turung, Khamti, Phake, Aiton of Tai Community, Singphoo and Duwonia of Buddhist religion observed it, on the full moon day between January-February, two months before Buddha Purnima.
According to the followers, this day was observed by Lord Buddha to shortening his life three months before his supreme deliverance. The word Mai-Ku-Sung-Phai means to set fire heap of burning wood. Tall hayricks made of wood and straw are constructed and set fire by following religious customs and traditions.
In Villagers of Monting and Chola Pathar Shyam gaon, jointly observed this festival at Chola Pathar Buddha Vihar with day long programs of traditional sports, community feast, ritual and cultural programs. The Civil SDO of Charaidew Sub-division, Mr Lakhi Nandan Gogoi attended as chief guest in this program and inaugurated the set firing of wooden hayricks.

One Rehim Ali of Meckeypur killed by a speedy truck (AS-04-AC-2726) on Tuesday at around 6 pm near Nazira Charial. The truck was on its way from Nazira to Joysagar through Bor-Ali. After the accident the situation became tense and the agitated mob torched the vehicle at Na-Mati. Officials of Nazira Sub-Division reached the spot and controlled the situation.
One Luku Barua (11) son of Bubul and Akhomi Barua of Hudupara-Bharali Pukhuri village died on the spot at about 12 pm on November 24 when a road roller run over him. The boy was employed as a contract labour at a project work under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The Sectional Assistant of the PWD department, the roller driver and the field Assistant of the contractor have fled from the spot. Police have so far not registered any FIR against in this regard.

Simoluguri Police, in a tip-off, seized the several cartons of Tez guthka packets amounting to Rs.24,000 from one Juri Begum of Santak, Bogdai Gaon who brought the gutkhas to Santak from Jorhat on September 20. According to her confession, she sells these amount of Guthka every month from an agent, Rantu by name of Jorhat with the co-operation of Bitupon Khound of Sivasagar town every month in her place and the bordering state, Nagaland.
