Assam in grip of Saraswati puja festivity


With much pomp and gaiety of Saraswati puja grips Assam on Saturday.


Dressed in traditional Assamese attires, Schools and colleges girls are thronging the schools and colleges to offer puja to the goddess of learning. An undeclared beauty contest seems to have take place among the girls in Guwahati. Beauty parlours in the city are teeming with the girls from the premier colleges like Handique College, Cotton College and B Baruah College.


Several competition and cultural programems are being organised to mark the occasion.

At least 120 people have been injured when Adivasi Peoples’ Army triggered a powerful blast on the railway tracks in Rangiya that derailed four bogies of the Guwahati-Puri Express on Sunday. The incident took place in between Rangiya and Ghagrapar at around 8 in the evening. A deafening sound rocked the entire area just before the derailment where over 100 passengers have been injured. They have been rushed to the Rangiya hospital. A large crater was created on the tracks because of the the impact of the remote-controlled blast.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is all set to table the state budget for 2011-2012 on the day one of the budget session on Monday. The ten day long session will also hold debate on the budget on July 14 and 15. RTI activist Akhil Gogoi says they will at any cost prevent the prospect of big dams that would spell ecological disaster in Assam. KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi on Sunday blamed it all on the Gogoi government for the recent Dispur clash that killed three persons including a minor boy on June 22. Addressing a press conference at the Guwahati Press Club on Sunday, Gogoi said that the government is desperately trying to hide the Mitra Panel which blamed the administrative lapses for the clash.
