Mamoni Raisom Goswami passes away


Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months.


The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world.


She is the second Assamese recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary award in the year 2000.


Dr Goswami received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, the Jnanpith Award in 2000 and is the country’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate in 2008.


A few years back, she played the role of a peace negotiator in the ULFA-government peace talk. Later, ULFA elected her as the PCG member. Thousands of her fans rushed to the GMCH as soon as the sad news was spearing like wildfire.

A great loss to the literery world and a huge setback to the assamese culture. November 2011 has taken away from us two most distinguished and illustrious persons. It is almost impossible to fill up the void created on account of the sad demise of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and Mamoni Raisom Goswami. May the almighty God grant eternal peace to the departed souls.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked Chief Secretary PC Sarma to probe into the matter as to why Assam tableaux is not being put in this year’s Republic Day function in New Delhi and submit the report forthwith. Asom Sahitya Sabha is mired in yet another controversy with former secretary of the Sabha and the sitting president are lashing out at each other.Addressing a press conference in the city on Friday, Patgiri along with Satyendra Narayan Goswami, Krishna Rai Medhi, Dharani Goswami said the Asom Sahitya Sabha president Kanaksen Deka must quit the post for his involvement in some cases of extortion which is degrading the value of the state's largest literary body. Also they say there are some other cases which is why the Sabha officials have to hang their heads in shame. Therefore, they demanded Deka's resignation saying he had lost his moral rights.
