Women’s Panorama launched

A new monthly magazine named Women’s Panorama was launched on 11-11-11 at Guwahati Press Club. Published by the Shillong based Eastern Panorama group of publications, Women’s Panorama is the first comprehensive magazine (English) dedicated for the woman of northeast India.

Inaugurating the first issue (November 2011) of Women’s Panorama, eminent film maker from Assam, Manju Bora expressed hope that the magazine will emerge as a trusted platform for all walks of women in the region.

The award wining film director and also an acclaimed author, Ms Bora however rejected the conventional idea of a woman magazine to be confined to some recipes, make-up and fashion tips. She argues that the magazine should enlighten the readers about various field of activities, which help them to get empowered.

Mentioning about some national woman magazines like Femina, Savvy, Women’s Era with Sananda in Bengali and Nandini, Prio Sakhi, Barnali, Mondakini etc in Assamese, Ms Bora agrees that those have helped the woman readers to get enlightened.

“But we have to do more. The women’s issue should be reflected in proper perspective. I hope Women’s Panorama can bring a real change,” she concluded.

Addressing the gathering Harsh Jhunjhunwala, editor-in-chief of Women’s Panorama described about the initial plan for the magazine and assured the readers a sensitive, balanced and comprehensive product every month.

Similarly, Women’s Panorama editor Sonata Dkhar highlighted the focus areas of the magazine and mentioned about her pledge to bring various burning issues related to millions of women in the alienated and trouble-torn region of the country.

Earlier the chief guest of the meeting Ms Bora was felicitated by Madhulata Jhunjhunwala on behalf of the two decades old publication group. A number of journalists, writers, social activists and contributors to Women’s Panorama were also felicitated during the meeting, which was presided over by N. Thakuria.

Before the meeting starts, one minute silence was observed in memory of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who had left for heavenly abode on November 5 in Mumbai. Paying the heartiest tribute to the legendary cultural icon, the launching of Women’s Panorama, earlier scheduled on November 7, 2011 was also postponed.
