Water supply project: foundation stone laid at Dokmoka

The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has adopted a comprehensive initiative to supply safe and potable water for the people of greater Dokmoka Tekelangjung areas. As a beginning initiative taken up by the PHE department, KAAC, the foundation stone of the salient water supply project was laid by Assam HAD Minister, Kharsing Engti today at Bheloghat under Howraghat LAC which project cost is Rs 1865.89 lakhs. According to official report, altogether 21 numbers of habitations to be covered under this greater Dokmoka Tekelanjung water supply project.

The type of source and system of the project will be tapping of surface of river Dikharu and gravity feed scheme. Type of water treatment of the water supply project will be conventional treatment plant comprising of pre-sedimentation tank, aeration, flush mixture, clarifloculator, rapid sand filter, disinfection and clear water reservoir.

The Howraghat PHE division will monitor the project as implementation agency.

It may be mentioned here the Tekelangjung area was identified as excessive level of fluorite affected area of the Karbi Anglong hill district. The first ‘fluorosis’ case in Karbi Anglong district was detected by the PHE department in the year 1999 in Tekelangjung area where fluoride level was found as high as 5 mg to 23 mg against the permissible limit of 1.50 mg as per World Health Organization (WHO).

It is worth mentioning that numbers of villagers of the Tekelanjung areas have been affected and many of them are crippling yet for life, by drinking water containing excessive levels of fluorides. The worst affected area was the Takelangung, where more than about 600 people out of the 2,300 surveyed were affected by the hydro-flourosia, according to Chief Engineer of Public Health Department.

It may be mentioned here that still several cases of both dental and skeletal fluorosis are found in the aforesaid area. Many fluoride mitigating steps were adopted by the KAAC earlier but could not benefit the people of the area as needed. But how many the proposed salient water supply project will be beneficial for the sufferer people the time will only say in future.
