ThaneswarHazarika, of the Bokakhat Town and the local correspondent of The Sentinel newspaperdied on Saturday at his residence following prolonged illness. Born in Majuli, Hazarika was 64 at the time of his demise.
Notededucationist, Hazarika retired as the principal-in-charge of JDSG college, Bokakhat. He was associated with various newspapers of Assam including The Assam Tribune, Dainik Asom, The Sentinel, The Eastern Clarion, Natun Dainik etc. He was serving as the president of Bokakhat Press Club at the time of his demise.
Highly admired by the people of Bokakhat, Hazarika leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a son, besides a host of relatives.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday said that Akhil Gogoi has secret understanding to defeat Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Talking to reporters after attending a poll rally in Sivasagar, Gogoi said that both Modi and Akhil Gogoi won’t be able to dislodge his party. “Let them do these. Let them take on me and our party. We won’t allow it to happen,” said Gogoi. The chief minister’s comment assumes significance a day after the KMSS president pledged to go all out against him and Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Police seized 84 bottles of foreign liquor in Guwahati on Tuesday citing it a case of violation of modal code of conduct. sources told Assam Times that the seizure was conducted in Khanapara when a person was carrying these commodities. The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday adjourned the move to register cases against Chief Minister and revenue minister in connection with the Pranab Boro self immolation case.The high court intervention came after the court heard a petition of the government challenging the additional chief judicial magistrate’s order to file a case against the duo acting on the complaint of the victim’s wife.The court, however, has issued notice to the ACJM in Kmarup in this regard and decided to hear the entire case after the bihu.Notably, ACJM has directed Dispur police to file case against chief minister Tarun Gogoi and revenue minister Pritivi Majhi on the basis of Purnima Boro’s allegation that the duo...

Finally, Tezpur police have registered a case against Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma acting on the complaint of making communal statement in a recent poll rally.The case bearing No 266/14 has been registered in Borhat police station on Tuesday. Congress is set to lodger complaint against Tezpur BJP candidate Ram Prasad Sarma charging him with striking deal with a banned militant outfit to ensure victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The move comes a day after a senior party leaders revealed in Biswanath Chaliali that NDFB-S assured the BJP candidate of support when they held a secret meeting in Bhalukpung a couple of days back.But a section of BJP leaders have denied any meeting with the militant outfit.
