voter awareness campaign failed to make impact on Dr.Manmohan Singh, Prim Minister of India, as he did not cast vote here. What do you expect from general public? Though he later on said that he has casted vote throuh Postal Ballot, he had to give the explanation due to report in the media fearing criticism- one feel.

Escalating tension in Chirang

Tension is escalating in Chirang after two school goers were shot dead by police during a counter insurgency operation.         The incident took place at Runikhata in the morning when police opened fire at a group of students on their way to the school during an operation.          Two students namely Jiri Narzary and Pranjit Narzary died on the spot while three others sustained injury who were shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.          Then the irate mob rushed to the Runikhata police station and set it on fire. Even the police vehicles were not spared.

JFA condemns killing of Chhattisgarh journalist Sai Reddy

Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) has expressed shock at the killing of Chhattisgarh based journalist Sai Reddy, who according to media report, was killed by Maoist activist on Friday last. Reddy (51), a native of Basaguda village in Naxalite-hit Bijapur district of south Chhattisgarh, used to write for Deshbandhu newspaper of the State. Media reports say that Reddy was attacked by a group of Maoists with sharp weapons in broad daylight on December 6. Another tripartite talks for peace

NDFB's Ranjan Daimari faction struck a ceasefire pact with the Centre on Friday which is believed to be of great help to restore peace in BTAD.  Union joint home secretary Sambhu Singh represented the Centre in the tripartite in Guwahati where NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary was present.            The Bodo militant agreed to deposit over 40 arms apart from a list of 379  militants who would be kept in 2 designated camps.            Daimary told reporters after the talks thata their demands are purely political and hoped the the problem woule be sold politically.         ADGP AK Route and home secretary...

Decks are clear for Upper House. The strength of the council of ministers is also set to be increased soon. An emergency cabinet meeting held at the residence of prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh appoved the proposal for the Upper House which has been pending for the last couple of months.

Steps to curb violence

A brain storming meet  of police heads from 14 districts chalked out a slew of strategies to counter the growing militant activities in these districts.  Presiding over the meeting at Assam police Headquarters on Thursday, DGP JN Chaudhury asked the SPs and IGs and DIGs to sternly deal with the fanning militant forces in the state.       The state of late, has witnessed an orgy of militanta activities in the form of murder, abduction and extortion forcing the centre to keep Dispur on alert.

Gogoi gets tougher

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said the the government wont tolerate any crime against women. Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Wednesday, Gogoi said that a special task force would deal with the case. According to the chief minister, post mortem report suggests no rape. He hoped the truth would come to light soon.

Escalating protest in Lakhimpur

Five days have passed since a woman was brutally attacked and dumped on the roadside in Lakhimpur who succumbed injuries at the GMCH. Bongaigaon blast injured dead

The minor boy critically injured in the Bongaigaon blast died in Guwahati on Wednesday.      The three year old boy died three days after he was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.          The minor boy was critically wounded in Bongaigaon on Sunday as he was on the way to attend the Raas festival in the evening along with his parents.           Suspected NDFB-B exploded the powerful grenade in the town leaving 10 injured.

Shocking witch hunt in Nagaon

Three more people of a family were killed in the name of witch hunt. The incident took place at Rangalibasti area five days ago. The bodies of the Karbi family were recovered on Tuesday night four days after they went missing. The incident came to light after one of the family members found them traceless. He approached police alleging that on several earlier occassions a section of the villagers inflicted inhuman torture suspecting witch craft. Police arrested three persons in this connection and acting on their confessional statement police dug up the bodies from a jungle.
