voter awareness campaign failed to make impact on Dr.Manmohan Singh, Prim Minister of India, as he did not cast vote here. What do you expect from general public? Though he later on said that he has casted vote throuh Postal Ballot, he had to give the explanation due to report in the media fearing criticism- one feel.

HC order on Nido case

In a landmark directive, the Delhi High Court on Monday asked the Centre, Delhi Government to file affidavit on the recent dreaded attack on Nido Tania where the victim died.Taking a suo moto case on the death of the Arunachal Pradesh student last week in Lajpotnagar, a division bench of the court asked the concerned part to file report by Wednesday.

Rahul’s reaches NE students

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday assured the north east people in New Delhi of help from his part to ensure their safety and security in the national.Gandhi, who visited the agitating north east people at the Jantar Mantor said that he would mount pressure on the competent authority to ensure safety of the people hailing from this region.He further expressed grave concern over the death of Nido Tania in goons attack in South Delhi.

CLP-BPFLP meet on Wednesday

The Assam Congress legislative party will meet on Wednesday to discuss the Rajya Sabha polls slated for Friday.The CLP has invited its alliance BPF legislators to attend the meeting at the Assam Assembly. Congress has two candidates namely Bhuneswar kalita and Dr Sanjay Singh while it backed BPF candidate Biswajeet Daimary.With the support of three independent candidates, Congress needs two other crucial votes to get the three candidates elected to the Upper House.   

Homecoming season for MLAs

Amid hectic confabulations for the Rajya Sabbha polls, Congress and BPF are all set to get two MLAs back.Zaved Islam is set to be back to the party hardly a year he was expelled from the party on the charge of dissidence.APCC reconsidered the decision following the party’s lack of strength to ensure smooth sailing of the party candidates in the Rajya Sabha polls.Similarly, BPF is also set to get its expelled MLA back to vote for Daimary. 

Rs 288 cr for NRC

The Centre has sanctioned a huge amount of Rs 288 crore fund to update the NRC within a period of 3 years.This was what the government told the Supreme Court on Monday. The Centre disclosed the figure when the top court was resuming the hearing of a PIL filed by the Assam Public Works.The Supreme Court was satisfied with the preliminary works to update the NRC and fixed the next hearing date on August 4.

AASU warns Mali

Hundreds of AASU activists hit the streets in Palashbari on Monday asking MLA Jatin Mali not to vote for the ruling party candidates.With banners and festoones in the hands, the AASU activists said that Mali won’t be allowed to land in the constituency if he votes in favour of the ruling party candidates.On the other hand, education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday called on the former AGP MLA and discussed the Rajya Sabha election. Mali earlier mde it clear that he won’t vote for the AGP-sponsored candidate.

Opp letter to EC

The Opposition parties are all set to urge the election commission to ensure a free and fair Rajya Sabha polls in Assam slated for February 7.AGP sources told Assam Times that they will soon sent a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner to send central observers to deal with the horse trading attempt by the ruling party. 

KMSS activists flogged

Several people have been injured when policemen sprang upon a crowd of KMSS protesters in Titabor on Monday.The incident took place in the afternoon when thousands of people were participating at a dharna in front of the Titabor SDO office demanding CBI probe into the alleged scam in the water supply scheme.Protestors told Assam Times that despite repeated request the SDO was reluctant to receive their memorandum. “Policemen on duty started flogging us indiscriminately without any altercation.
