Assam bleeds before Assembly polls; 8 BSF jawans killed, 5 Congress men injured


Assam bleeds again. Bombs and bullets threatens to bury the hope of peace in the poll bound state. After a brief silence, the anti-talk faction of NDFB and ULFA roared again. Eight BSF personnel were killed and 5 Congress men have been injured in two seperate strike by the banned insurgent outfit on Monday.


At least eight BSF personnel were killed and the same number injured on Monday in an ambush by the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland in Kokrajhar district. Th e Bodo outfit used automatic weapons to ambush the convoy of the BSF in remote Ultapani forest area near the Indo-Bhutan border.


The BSF jawans were killed on the spot, five others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Some of the eight injured jawans were rushed to the Hospital at Bongaigaon, while others were taken to Kokrajhar civil hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Bijoy Kumar, S K Sharma, Arabinda Dere, Bolaram Lamba, Santa Ramthree, Naresh Kumar, Kuber Bora and Hira Singh.


A combing operation have been launched by the security forces, including the Army along the Indo-Bhutan border, to nab the culprits. The patrol was on way from Bangladoba in Chirang district of Assam to Ultapani in Kokrajhar when it was ambushed.


Hours after this attack, ULFA lobbed a powerful EID at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati leaving 5 perosns injured. The incident took place at around 6-55 in the evening with a huge sound when party spokesman Mehdi Alom Bora was sitting at his chamber. Kalyan Gogoi, Akhsyay Rajkhowa and Ranjan Bora were also left injured in the blast. Mehdi Alom Bora’s condition is critical who is undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.


Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who arrived in Guwahati from Delhi rushed to the GMCH immediately after the incident and visited the injured persons. Gogoi also visited the incident spot and instructed the district administration to firmly deal with the situation. Several other political parties also have criticized the banned insurgent outfit for the blast.


Meanwhile, ULFA has claimed the responsibilities of the blast and threatened to continue these attack. In an e-mail statement sent to media, Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah said that this attach is simply a message to Congress. The blast took place a day after the ruling party announced the names of 118 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls.


It may be noted that ULFA threatened to target the Congress parties in rank and file for splitting the outfit. But the government downplayed the threat.

Security forces have stepped up counter offensives against the militants fomenting trouble in the BTAD areas.      A hardcore NDFB militant have been killed at an encounter in Kokrajhar on Sunday.            Identified as Lalit Brahma, the militant was killed in the encounter at Bongsijhora area in the area.                On the other hand,security forces have held a MULTA militanta during the joint operation in Chitila in Kokrajhara on Sunday night.
Police have arrested a Naga militant in connection with the recent killing of the irrigation engineer.           Identified as Ibung Kuame, the NSCN militant was held from a tiny hamlet on Sunday evening.           According to police, Kuame was one of the five militants who shot dead executive engineer Rajib Pathak at his chamber in Haflong.         He was arrested during a joint operation in the area. Security forces further seized 400 gm RDX along with a magzine, 200 bullets of AK series rifles, some detonator from his possession.
Stung by the recent spate of violence, police have intensified offensive against the militant forces mongering trouble along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Goalpara.          Four Rabha National Liberation Front militants have been killed during a joint operation in the district.    The incident took place at Bogulamari on Sunday afternoon.        The offensive is in progress.
KPLT has freed all the workers 24 hours after they kidnapped at gunpoint from Kaziranga.         The five remaining workers reached Kohora on Sunday nights.              Seven have been released a few hours after they were forcibly taken away to the jungle.        The reason is yet to be confirmed.
There is no trace of the four workers a day after KPLT kidnapped them at gunpoint from Kaziranga.        According to information, the Karbi militants kidnapped altogether 11 workes from Kaziranga on their way to lift bamboos with a local trader.              Hours after 7 workers have been released. But thd remaining others are still untraced.  Police operation is in progress.
Assam paid glowing tribute Lachit Barphukan across the state on Sunday.            People of all walks gave salute to the great Ahom General for his heroic and untiring deeds at the battle of Saraighat.     Senior district administration officials laid floral tribute to the great hero at the statue in Jalukbari.          Some other organizations in Guwahati also observed the Lachit day with pomp and gaiety.             Noted actors Nitish Bharadwaj and Rajesh Khanna attended two functions in the city.
A major train mishap eludes Guwahati on Sunday when security forces caught two thieves who were trying to steal slippers from railway tracks in the city. According to information, the duo were caught near Jalukbari where they were removing the slippers hardly before the arrival of the Saraighat Express. The security forces on petrolling duty saw them but the started running away. But they were overpowered. They the duo were handed over to police where interrogation is underway.
Normal functionings have yet to resume in BCPL a day after local AASU unit forced shut down of the Lepetkota based gas cracker project alleging move to recruit outside candidates. Hundreds of AASU activists on Friday staged dharna in front of the BCPL campus demanding cancellation of the written test slated for Sunday to select 60 candidates.
