International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.

Police constable Abhijit Baruah once again makes Assam proud when set new record of hitting the highest number of punches in a minute on the boxing pad on Thursday.The 23-year-old cop hit 387 punches in Delhi to break the record he himself set a couple of moths ago in Jorhat. The attempt was made at the Assam Bhawan in the national capital in presence of observers from the Asian Book of Records. Earlier in October last year, he broke record with 329 punches on a boxing pad at an event held in Jorhat stadium. The Centre has raised the margin money for khadi and village industries from Rs 66 cr to Rs 100 cr for the next financial year 2013-2014.This was confirmed by none other than Union Minister of State for MSME (Independent) KH Muniyappa in Guwahati. He said that the decision was taken at a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and senior officials . According to him, his ministry wants to reach out to the young and educated people to set up new enterprises, for which it has adequate funds. Renowned vaishnavite veteran Sonaram Chutia passed away after a brief ailment on Wednesday. Chutia died at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital at 9.15 in the evening. He was 98 and was accorded with cabinet rank 3 years back. Born on June 8 in 1915, Chutia cleared his graduation in science from Cotton College. His cremation is taking place on Thursday with full state honour.
In major breakthrough, Dhemaji police intercepted a truckload of IMFL coming from Arunachal Pradesh suspected to be distributed among the voters just before the polling of panchayat elections.The truck carrying 4000 litres of IMFL in bottles were seized by the excise department at Laluk last night by the district administration.The truck driver claimed that the liquor bottled at Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh and were being transported to that state's East Siang district through the only road between the two places which runs through Lakhimpur district.
Karimganj police on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of a youth for torturing a five-year-old girl. The five-year-old girl, who went missing on January 28 evening, was found lying in a paddy field with severe injuries near her house at Pinnagar village on January 29. Her father alleged that she was raped by the youth, who was arrested by the police on the basis of the allegation. But the youth claimed that he was asked by the girl's father to take her home but she entered a wedding function on the way and went missing from there.
