International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Saturday that he is not in the possession of the IIT report on artificial floods in Guwahati. Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi said that he would ask the water resource department to ensure the receipt of the report prepared by the IIT experts on the waterlogging in Guwahati.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Saturday that the government has a plan to raise two separate forces to protect and preserve wetland and hills areas. Addressing a press conference in Dispur, the chief minister said that the authorities have identified 376 vulnerable areas in the hill top surrounding Guwahati where landslide could wreak havoc. He said that these forces would be able to deal wih the growing encroachment in wetland and hills areas.

Over 50 people had a narrow escape in Guwahati when 13 houses collapsed in landslide on Saturday. The incident took place in the morning at Kharghuli hilltop where 13 houses were damaged in landslide. The people inside the houses, who were remaining alert, however, managed to escape the tragedy. The incident took place 24 hours after three persons of a family died in landslide in Bhangagarh area.
There is forecast of more rainfall to add to the flood woes in Guwahati. According to the Guwahati meterological centre, heavy rains would lash Guwahati during th last 12 hours. Heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorm is likely to hit the premier north eastern city now caught in massive water logging. Rupnagar area alone has recorded 57 mm rainfall during the last 30 hours.
The NDRF team deployed in relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit in Guwahati on Saturday fished out the body of Vivek Shah a day after the youth was washed away by the Bharalu river. NDRF authority confirmed that Vivek’s boy was recovered from the Bharalu river in Bhangagarh in the morning a day after he was washed away from Anil Nagar on Friday.
