International Women’s Day observed at Rangaloo

International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.


On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.


More than three hundred women participants were gathered in a slide presentation based on International Women’s Day celebration theme of the year 2011, ‘Equal access to Education, training and science and technology, pathway to decent work place for women’ Md. Mritunjoy 108 workers took part in the open session and spoke about the first aid- precautionary measures to be taken at emergency.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Saturday that he is not in the possession of the IIT report on artificial floods in Guwahati. Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi said that he would ask the water resource department to ensure the receipt of the report prepared by the IIT experts on the waterlogging in Guwahati.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Saturday that the government has a plan to raise two separate forces to protect and preserve  wetland and hills areas. Addressing a press conference in Dispur, the chief minister said that the authorities have identified 376 vulnerable areas in the hill top surrounding Guwahati where landslide could wreak havoc. He said that these forces would be able to deal wih the growing encroachment in wetland and hills areas.

One after another tragic incidents seem to have shocked Guwahati during the last 24 hours after the city was caught in massive water logging. Yet another person was electrocuted to death in the city giving rise to the toll in the flood-hit city. The incident took place at Narengi near the LG towar where Mustak King Khan, a daily wage earner from Bihar died on the spot. Over 50 people had a narrow escape in Guwahati when 13 houses collapsed in landslide on Saturday. The incident took place in the morning at Kharghuli hilltop where 13 houses were damaged in landslide. The people inside the houses, who were remaining alert, however, managed to escape the tragedy. The incident took place 24 hours after three persons of a family died in landslide in Bhangagarh area.
There is forecast of more rainfall to add to the flood woes in Guwahati. According to the Guwahati meterological centre, heavy rains would lash Guwahati during th last 12 hours. Heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorm is likely to hit the premier north eastern city now caught in massive water logging. Rupnagar area alone has recorded 57 mm rainfall during the last 30 hours. 
The NDRF team deployed in relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit in Guwahati on Saturday fished out the body of Vivek Shah a day after the youth was washed away by the Bharalu  river. NDRF authority confirmed that Vivek’s boy was recovered from the Bharalu river in Bhangagarh in the morning a day after he was washed away from Anil Nagar on Friday. Rescue and releif efforts are also goining on in the worst-hit Anil Nagar, Chandmari, Nabin Nagar where rainwaters have been refusing to recede.  
The overall situation in Guwahati seems to have marginally improved on Saturday a day after many parts of the city was caught in the massive waterlogging, electrocution and landslides that claimed nine lives on Friday. Rainwaters start receding in some parts of the city while the low lying areas are yet to get out of the blues. Waters in Lachit Nagar, Bhangagarh, Rupnagar areas are receding rapidly. But Anil Nagar, Chandmari, Nabin Nagar are still reeling under rain waters. The situation could turn worse if rain revisits with the next 24 hours. The overall flood situation remains unchanged in Guwahati till Saturday morning where many parts of the city are reeling under the rain waters. The situation took a grave turn when 4 persons were killed in landslide in Bhangagarh apart from three death due to electrocution during the last 12 hours in Rajgarh and Dwaroka Nagar.
