Dr. Himanta rushes to Barpeta on crucial Fire-Fighting, Peace Mission

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma rushed to the Barpeta on Thursday evening, immediately after reaching Guwahati from New Delhi. The southern district of ASSAM, Barpeta, plunged into a state of crisis and high tension after police resorted to firing, which killed four and wounded scores Wednesday. This follows highly charged protests and stone pelting by All Assam Minority Students Union (AMSU) around the DC’s Office Wednesday. AMSU was protesting for cancellation of the Pilot Project of the ongoing updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) citing anomalies.

Assam not an isolated case: Danger for North-East India---- Till the other day I and my friends were least bothered about the Bangladeshi influx in Assam . But the recent incidents where the Nagas blocked the National Highways 39 and 53 to Manipur has sent alarm bells ringing for us. Tomorrow if Assam becomes a part of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi chief minister of Assam blocks the national highway to Meghalaya, our state would face famine and will be cut off from the outside world. Assam is our state of origin and the heartland of North-east. The neighbouring hill states should learn from the Nagaland-Manipur blockade. All the political leaders, student organizations and civil society groups should counter Bangladeshis influx as being stuck to one another, the turmoil in Assam is not an isolated one. It might be a bit late but the hills will also face problems later. Tactics like blackmail through road blockade might be resorted to by the illegal migrants to further their territories in the hilly parts of the region. What Assam faces today, entire North-East will face tomorrow.

I fully agree with Neil. There is too much politics of divide & rule of the NE states. For the benefit of a vested section of people, suspicion and mistrust are sown in the minds of the populace of the region with the sole intention of preventing them to stand united in a single platform. Such a united platform may be a bit too hot & uncomfortable for these vested parties to handle and hence are divided in the name of tribals, non tribals, ethenic divide, religion, etc. The outcome we are busy engaged in squables and sling matches amongst ourselves for the benefit of the vested few. Its time we should see through this game of divide & rule and make an united stand to-gether. Let us brush our differences under the carpet atleast for the time being and take a stand to clear & clean the mess and put our neighbourhood in order. Thereafter we will have enough time to sit down amicably and settle our internal issues amongst ourselves. As wise men have said earlier "UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL". At the rate we are going and if no corrective steps are taken immediately, we will be wiped out of the map very soon.
