Rongali Bihu celebration at Bahrain

Rongali Bihu was celebrated at Bahrain with pomp and gaiety on 16th April at Hotel Phoenicia. The Assamese community at Bahrain, fondly called ‘Luitporia-Bahrainis’, started the preparation in all seriousness to make the celebration a grand success. The celebrations started with serving of Assamese delicacies specially prepared by the ladies at home.


The cultural program was formally inaugurated by Ms Nivedita Dutta. The inaugural chorus marked the beginning of the cultural show. Melodious solo performance of popular Assamese numbers by Manisha, Saswati, Jumi and Bobby were highly appreciated by the audience. Dance to the Jyoti Sangeet Muraa Bhaarotora performed by Nibedita, RajLakshmi and Monita was the highlight of the evening. Budding musicians Angshumaan and Jyotishmaan kept the audience spell bound for a few moments. The loudest applauds of the evening was showered to a costume show performed by the little children aged between 1 to 10 years who enacted the various ethnic groups of Assam through their costumes. They were Renee, Angshuman, Aryan, Snigdha, Reet, Jyotishmaan, Geet, Abhik, Amu, Tanisha, Emon, Raina and Ipshita. A chorus to the famous Bhupen Hazarika number ‘Axom Aamar Rupohi was sung by the same children. A game show, conducted by Pinky, took everyone’s breath away with her with and wit.


A bihu medley, sung by Manisha, Biman, Pinky, Hemanta, Sangita and Amitabh was highly entertaining. Bihu dance to a popular number, performed by Moromi, Riti, Manisha and Jumi marked the end of the cultural evening . Ujjwal, Arnab and Raju were the musicians supporting the singers throughout the show. The stage and the hall had excellent decoration to compliment the festival and the credit goes to Ankur and Amitabh, Pradip, Ujjwal and Nivedita.


The cultural evening was co-hosted by Sanjib Changkakati and Saswati Borah who provided a true ‘Bihu Toli’ ambience with their wit and oratory. To quote a bachelor “I felt like enjoying a bihu function in Guwahati”. Vote of thanks was given by Layan Chandra Hazarika.


The preparation for the Rongali Bihu Celebration is worth mentioning here. It all started sometime in mid-February by an email by our own Nita bou/ba/mami where she reminded that not many days are left for the bihu and it was time to tighten our belts and prepare. The enthusiastic Luitporia Bahrainis decided to meet in Central Café to jot down the modalities for the celebration. It was decided that Ujjwal and Arnab shall be in charge of the cultural aspects, Pradip and Amitabh for the infrastructure, Sanjib & Saswati will do the anchoring, Layan will do the Vote of Thanks. The ladies shall compliment in all aspects. The rehearsal sessions during the weekends were fun-filled and took place across the country to add local flavor to the show.


The most enthusiastic lot were the pretty ladies of the land namely Moromi, Charu Prabha, Pori, Riti, Mimi, Jumi, Pinky, Sangita, Manisha, Monita, Sangita, Munmun, Nagma, Inky, Bobby & Vandana who not only managed their homes, but also actively took part in organizing the show.


The celebrations ended with a sumptuous dinner serving Assamese culinary delights.


The Luitporia Bahrainis re-live the 16th April through sharing of photographs, videos and analyzing the performances.

3 Adivasi people deposed before Manisana panel

More than one hundred Adivasi people rushed to Guwahati on Wednesday to depose before the Justicer Manisana panel probing the Beltola incident but the chairman invited three of them to brief the infamous violence. North East Games gets underway

Despite a chilly Wednesday, the North East Games gets underway at a colourful fuction organised at the Sarusajai Sports Complex where Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi took salute of the march pass by the eight north eastern state teams. Sports Authority of India director Ratan P Watal attended the meeting as the guest of honour. As many as 2000 sports men are participating in the event to be concluded on February 2. Road mishap: 6 died, 38 injured in Numaligarh

Six people died and 38 others have been injured at a road mishap which took place on late Tuesday morning in Numaligarh near Babathan. According to information, a 609 bus bearing No. As-02-9791 from coming Lakhipur, Kaziranga on its way to Deopani Than in Karbi Anglong district fell down on the gorge. Five people died on the spot including the driver Reba Gogoi while one more died on the way to the Guwahati medical College Hospital. Other seriously injured people are under going treatment at the VKNRL Hospital. Some of the critically injured people have been rushed to the Golaghat Civil Hospital.

Road mishap:11 killed in Guwahati-Silchar road

Eleven passengers were killed when a Guwahati-Silchar bus skidded off the road and fell into a over 100-metre-deep gorge near Mawryngkneng, about 40 km from Shillong, in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya on Wednesday morning. According to information, there were 40 passengers in the Assam State Transport Corporation bus and most of them escaped with minor injuries. The injured people have been taken to the hospital.

Former NDFB cadre shot dead in ciy

Situation in the city’s Betkuchi area is still tense 15 hours after the killing of a former NDFB cadre..According to information, the incident took place at when three unidentified youths fired at the courtyard of his residence. The deceased was identified as Gambaru Basumatary. He died on way to hospital. Immediately after the incident, the miscreants left the scene. The police officials later came and the investigation is going on.

Tragic incident: 10 dead in Dhekiajuli

Ten people were left dead and more than thirteen injured when a Tata Safari has a head on collision with a truck in Sonitpur district’s Santipur Tiniali near Dhekiajuli on Wednesday morning. The deceased include six women. Local people have rushed the injure people to the Tezpur kanaklata Civil Hospital. Counting will end on Wednesday

The Congress is heading for a landslide victory in the overall scenario even as the ruling party is losing support in some of its strongholds. Panchayat polls: Major victory for Cong

The ruling party is set to scale a major victory in the panchayat polls towards the end of the vote counting on Tuesday. Congress is followed by the main opposition Asom Gana Parishad in most of the districts while BJP is brightening its prospect only in Dibrugarh district. Early trends:Cong, AGP go neck and neck

Congress is moving neck and neck with the opposition Asom Gana Parishad in the initial trend of the counting of votes that has begun in the morning on Monday. In Guwahati rural, AGP is leading over the ruling party while the AGP trailing behind the Congress by 10 seats in Dibrugarh district. In Jorhat also, the ruling party is trailing behind the opposition by one seat. Counting of votes has been delayed in Darrang district by three hours. Nalbari too delayed the counting of votes followed by police lathicharge outside the counting stations.

Congress heading for a comfortable victory

Barring a few districts, Congress is heading for a comfortable victory in the panchayat poll even as the counting of votes is going on.
