Cultural Sensation at Balipara- Focus on Assamese Culture

There are a serious of cultural workshops and events being organised at Balipara. With the help of some diligent cultural workers of the district the memorable cultural day of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rava was celebrated on 20th June 07, which is recognized as Bishnu Rava Day in Assam to give tributes to the venerable personality for his role in Assamese socio culture. On the eve of this occasion a seminar was organized artiste by “SETONA” (The sensation, a talent inquisitive organization of literature, culture and drama) which was attended by distinguished invitees to illuminate the works of the trustworthy. There were various programmes organized in phases depicting the rich cultural edition of Assam.

On 29th June 2007 some promising youths staged the drama “Rupalim” of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala which was directed by Swaraj Katoki (one of the popular drama workers present in Assam). The audience was highly appreciative of the efforts of the artists. The same evening, a journal of the organization “SETONA” was unveiled by prominent literalist and principal secretary of Asom Sahitya Sabha Dr. Pradip Bhuyan. In this colorful night the organization honored senior theater artiste Bhola Katoki, Mohini Bala Rava wife of the great Bishnu Rava, eminent social worker Mina Agarwala, distinguished film maker Upen Baruah and renowned actress Setona Das. Hereafter the stage was inaugurated by lightening of lamp by MLA of Rangapara constituency Abhijit Hazarika and a chorus was performed by associates from “SETONA”.

On 30th June 2007 an All Assam one act drama competition, district basis competition on Jyoti Sangeet and Bishnu Sangeet was organized.

The second phase of the programmes began again from 11th July 2007 which included district basis dramas, Jyoti Prasad and Bishnu Rava’s music and a Mising Folk culture workshop at the auditorium of Balipara Higher Secondary and was presided by the famous teacher of Assam, Nirmal Chandra Saikia . The auspicious occasion was inaugurated by Hiru Prasad Mahanta, officer in charge of Jyoti Bharati, Government of Assam. In this meeting some of distinguished personalities were also felicitated for their cultural contribution in this area earlier.

Swaraj Katoki, renowned drama instructor Gunakar Deva Goswami., dramatist Shukhdev Adhikari, Hiru Prasad Mahanta . The organizers informed AssamTimes that some distinguished and renowned front line personalities of drama and culture will participate in the workshop and it will continue upto 11th October 2007. In a press release the organizer informed that from coming 20th August 2007 the musical workshops on Jyoti-Bishnu Sangeet will also begun.

The efforts of the Organization “SETONA” are commendable in building this cultural atmosphere in the area which in turn is contributing and helping the young generation to be aware of Assamese culture.

More than thousands of people came out spontaneously to protest against government apathy to the devastating flood problem of Balipara which is a yearly phenomenon of this area since 1970. This year it broke the limits of endurance when continuously seven times it was flooded by river Jarasar. The entire area was submerged for one and half months. The protest rally demanded a permanent solution to the floods and similarly development of transportation and communication system of the area, erosion, and wild elephant depredation with various slogans.
