A two-day workshop on “Trauma Management on disasters” was organized by the IGNOU, in collaboration with Academy of Trauma at the A.C.Dutta auditorium of Cotton College Guwahati on 11th and 12th December. Altogether 95 participants from various institutions took part in the programme. Dr Indra Kumar Bhattacharya, Principal of Cotton College inaugurated the workshop Speaking on the occasion, Dr Bhattacharyya expressed the need of younger generation to be aware of the natural and man made disasters, their consequences in terms of death and disabilities apart of loss of infrastructures. Dr D S Bhattacharyya, OSD, Institute for Professional Competency Advancement of Teachers through ODL (IPCAT) attended the programme as the Guest of Honour. The Welcome Address was delivered by DR Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU .Delivering the keynote address, Dr Utpal Kumar Tamuli, Secretary of Academy of Trauma, informed that their organization is propagating the basic life support skills required by common people to tackle the injured victims at the site of accident, be it be due to earthquake, roadside accident, bomb blast or fire. He emphasized that proper application of these basic skills and appropriate transportation of the injured people can reduce the death and disabilities by 40%. On the first day of the workshop, Dr Sushil Goswami enumerated the dangers of earthquake, and precautions to be taken. Mr. Partha Jyoti Das of Aranyak expressed concerned over the flood situation in the Brahmaputra basin, particularly the climate changes and adoption techniques. Mr. Beni Madhab Doley, Mr. Dilip Kumar Bora, Mr. Rajib Purkayastha and Col Atul Gupta discussed in details about roadside accidents, fire, global warming and bomb blast and created awareness amongst the young college students of various colleges and institutions of Guwahati. On the second day, the group of doctors of Academy of trauma presented papers on various aspects of trauma management. Dr Biraj Saikia explained in details the necessary of ABC of basic life support. Dr U.K.Tamuli spoke about fracture and bleeding management. Dr Atanu Barthakur stressed the importance of sorting out the serious or critically ill patients and the methods of proper transportation. Dr Hemonta Dutta explained about the specialties of pediatric injuries and burn injuries. Dr Prasanta Gogoi numerated about the health impact of flood; Dr Soumitra Ghosh explained the stresses the people suffer after an injury. The doctors presented a hand on workshop on these activities to all the delegates. A handbook was also released on this occasion. Interaction were held after the presentation by each Resource person where the participants took active part and raised number of queries on various aspects of Trauma Management. Expressing her satisfaction, Mrs. Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional director of IGNOU expressed that such workshop will be conducted in various other districts of Assam in the near future.
