Tourism seminar held at Handique College

A two day Seminar on the theme “Role of students/Youth and Women for socio economic development of North East with special emphasis on Tourism Sector” organized by Handique Girls' College was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Sri Tarun Gogoi at the college premises on August 26.


Dr Indira Bardoloi, Principal of the college delivered the welcome address H.S. Das, Principal Secretary, Finance, Govt of Assam, and Sri Dilwar Hussain, Director of Higher Education attended the programme as Guest of Honour. Sri Tarun Gogoi also inaugurated the newly renovated Library Building, which was completed at a cost of Rs.20 lakh sanctioned from Chief Ministers Untied Fund. Sri Gogoi appreciated the effort of the College in organising the Seminar to promote development of the Tourism. He stated that there is immense potential for improving the socio-economic conditions of the people through various activities related to Tourism. He announced that the State Government will provide all necessary assistance for developing a second campus of the College.


Dr Shyam Bhadra Medhi, Former Commissioner for Tourism, Govt of Assam delivered the keynote address of the Seminar.


The theme of the Seminar was introduced by Nabajit Dutta, Asst. Co-ordinator of the programme. Dutta in his introduction mentioned that generating awareness amongst the common people of the region for creating a proper atmosphere for accelerated development of the region through the empowerment of students / youth and women is one of the main objective of the seminar.


Himangshu Shekhar Das, IAS , Principal Secretary (Finance) asked the College to design and introduce a vocational course in Tourism and assured to provide necessary assistance from the Government in this regard.


Several Resource persons including Hemanga Sarma, Managing Director, AIDC, Dr Sunil Saikia , Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship, Biswajit Sinha, Programme Co-ordinator, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India,Ataur Rahman, Retired IGP, D K Sharma, Executive President, NECCI, Dr Ranjit Sinha, Director, Innovations, Dr Alaka Chakraborty, Co-ordinator, IGNOU, Handique Girls' College , etc took part in the deliberations. The Technical Sessions were chaired by Dr Shyam Bhadra Medhi, Former Commissioner, Govt of Assam, Tandra Das & Dr Santana Kakati from Handique Girls' College and Dr Nripendra Narayan Sharma from Assam Institute of Management. Faculty members from NEHU, Assam University, Dibrugarh University and several colleges, Travel agencies etc participated in the deliberations.


The closing function was held on August 27 at the State Museum Auditorium. A Souvenir was published on the occasion which was released by Dr Indira Bardoloi, Principal, Handique Girls' College .
