The Assam Press Correspondents’ Union has demanded an empowered Media Council of India, which can look after various issues of media persons effectively in the country. The media persons’ organization has asserted that the Press Council of India has slowly lost its relevance as it has no role to play on ensuring financial security to the working journalists. The APCU also raised its voice for a regional office of the media council in Guwahati. The demands were highlighted during a meeting organized on the occasion of the National Press Day.
Organized by the Assam Press Correspondents’ Union at Guwahati Press Club, the significant Day was celebrated with various programes today by the media persons. The celebration started with flag hoisting and culminated with a general meeting in the press club auditorium. A veteran journalist of South Kamrup, Khagen Bayan was also felicitated by the organizers.
Presided over by the APCU president Sobhit Chtri, the meeting was also addressed by senior journalists Bhabesh Baruah, Hiten Mahanta, Ranen K. Goswami, Nava Thakuria with others.

A fake financial institute has once again duped lakhs of customers during the last two year. The institution in question is Jivan Surakhya Group. Proprietor Chandan Das, who has recently sold out a satellite TV news channel is absconding. That too a week ahead of the date of payments to its agents and customers.Hundreds of customers vandalized its Hatigaon based office on Wednesday a day after another section of customers did it in Sonari at Sivasagar. It’s a narrow escape from a powerful explosion in Barpeta Road. Police recovered a powerful bomb from a train track in Barpeta Road railway station on Wednesday.Weighing 800 gm, the explosive was planted with electrical wires, was hidden under boulders of track number one on platform two.After noticing it, a local resident informed the police who later defused the bomb at around 9.30 in the morning. Good news for government employees. Dispur has raised the Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief for its employees and pensioners from 65 to 72 per cent. The revision is effective from July 1.Following the increase, the DA will be at par with Central Government employees. Atleast three children were feared to have met watery grave after two boats collided in the river Brahmaputra in Barpeta district on Tuesday.The incident took place on Monday midnight when a country-made boat collided with another boat in the Brahmaputra river at the remote Pub Aandabhanga-Saldiyapara area of Chenga.
