First Assamese Lady to receive Glory of India Award in UK

On 18 July, 2009, Rini Kakati was presented with the prestigious "Glory of India Award" from the India International Society. The "Glory of India Award" ceremony was held at the St. James, Buckingham Gate, London. She is the first Assamese lady to receive this prestigious award.


An international organisation of global repute and influence, it represents the people of India, now nearing one billion living in India and millions more in other countries and Non-Indians of various nationalities, who support India. It espouses humanitarian causes, promotes universal brotherhood and especially works for India's development by campaigning for and mobilising NRI and foreign investment in India.


The award recognises those members of the Indian Diaspora from all around the world, who have etched their own distinct identity - socially, professionally and culturally by the virtue of their own excellence. These individuals have been proactive and instrumental in strenghthening Indo-British ties and encouraging foreign investment in Indian projects and thus contributing to the economic growth of India.


Mrs. Kakati was recognised for her outstanding career and community work, socially, educationally and culturally spanning 35 years, started at the Area 4 Department of Social Services and Community Health in Brent Council. Her academic career started by opening up the Neighbourhood English classes, at Nicole Road Project Centre in Harlesden, also her highly respected and distinguished work in establishing a local nursery for the underprivileged and a drop-in-centre for the women and children at Church Road. In addition, Mrs. Kakati's many community and dedicated works were recognised. She was the first Asian woman Governor at Newfield Junior school. She is multi-lingual and her asset to help the community at large in today's multi-cultural Britain.


On 18 July, 2009, "Glory of India Award" presentation ceremony held in London, were attended by distinguished dignitaries from around the world, including the award presenters invited as guests of honour. Mrs. Kakati was bestowed her award by Mr. M.V. Rajasekharan (Former Union Minister of State for Planning, Govt. of India) the Right Hon'rble: Mr. Marsha Singh, MP ( House of Commons and chief guest), Baroness Sandip Verma (Member of House of Lords) and guest of honour Baroness Prashar of Runnymede (Member of House of Lords)

B'deshi deportation: Govt admits difficulties

The Assam government finds it quite difficult to deport the Bangladeshi immigrants. This was what Assam Accord implementation minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman informed the Assam Assembly on Tuesday morning. Replying to a set of questionnaires posed on the floor, Dr Barman said the BDR is quite reluctant to accept these Bangladeshi nationals in question. The country's top industrialists and bankers are assembling in Guwahati as the the principal city of the north eastern region hosts Assam investment advisory board on Tuesday. Major scam at Mising Autonomous body

Police seem to have unearthed a huge financial scam at the Mising autonomous council when Rs.16 lakh was recovered from the council's principal secretary Gargaram Deori on Monday. According to sources, a team of CID rounded up him in the afternoon in Mongoldoi on his way to Guwahati. A bag containing Rs 16.5 lakh was recovered from his possession. Interrogation is in progress.

SC notice to Assam Chief Secy

The Assam government was today left red faced when the Supreme Court on Monday slapped a notice to Assam chief secretary PC Sarma. The court has entertained an allegation of violation of traffic rules at the Srirampur entry point along the Assam-West Bengal interstate border.

DHD-J Chief Absconding: Govt

For the first time on Monday the Assam government admitted that dreaded terrorist and DHD-J chief Niranjan Hojai is absconding. This was confirmed by Assam forest minister Rockybul Hussain as he was replying to a set of questionnaires on the floor of the House on Monday. After laying down arms and ammunition Niranjan was rushed to a designated camp in the district. The minister said he would be arrested as soon as he is spotted.

Unprecedented happening in Assam Assembly; proceedings halt for 1 hour

The proceedings in Assam Assembly came to a grinding halt on Friday for almost an hour a day after the debate went all time low on Thursday. As the House began its question hour at around 9 in the morning, Opposition members did not allow the Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai to come out of the chamber demanding steps to rein in Assam health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who locked horn with former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. Deputy Speaker Pranati Phukan who began the question hour in the absence of the opposition members adjourned the House for an hour. ULFA leader Pradeep Gogoi released from jail

ULFA Vice president Pradeep Gogoi was released from jail a week after he procured bail from a local TADA court. Gogoi completed his formalities on Thursday and came out of the Guwahati Central Jail on Thursday evening and stayed for the night at Guwahati and on Friday morning left for his home district Sivasagar. On his way to Mautgaon in Sivasagar, the ULFA top leader was accorded a heroic welcome by the people who lined up at the road side from the morning. Talking to reporters in Guwahati immediately after his release, Gogoi hoped that other ULFA leaders would be freed to help them sit together to hold a meaningful talk with the government.

CAT cancels Sankar Baruah’s appointment as DGP

The Central Administrative Tribunal has scrapped the appointment of Sankar Prasad Baruah as the Assam police director general. The tribunal has further asked the Assam Government to appointa new police chief within a period of one month. The significant order came up on Friday when CAT was delivering its final order on senior additional director general Sarada Prasad who challenged Baruah’s appointment as DGP violating the seniority rules. The CAT, however, has asked Barooah to continue his office until the government makes an alternative arrangement. Opp. thrashes goverment over tribal welfare

The Assam government drew flak on the second of the Budget Session for its failure to hold election in number of tribal autonomous bodies. AGP MLA- Chandramohan Patowary, Ramendra Narayan Kalita, along with Independent MLA Bhuban Pegu and others blamed the government for the poor economic background of the tribal people. The ruling party MLAs also charged the opposition parties with not helping the government. Tribal welfare minister, Promilarani Brahma tried to pacify the opposition parties but failed.
