School children plant medicinal plants
The students of Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School planted hundreds of medicinal plants at Kalaigaon on May 16 at 10 am.More than hundred of ‘Mahaneem,Silikha and Amlakhis’ were planted at the premises of Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School,Kalaigaon. Students,under the guidance of teachers not only planted the saplings; but also vowed to take good care of them. Fencings were too provided to the plants by the students in order to protect them. The most encouraging aspect of the programme was ,groups consisting with one senior and one junior student in each groups planted the medicinal saplings, so that the saplings would be protected even after the departure of the senior student from the school.
According to B.N.Dey, headmaster of Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School,the plantations had been done under ‘National Awareness Campaign 2008-09,Ministry of Environment and Forest,Government of India, in collaboration with Assam Science Society,Guwahati.The headmaster also said that the project titled,’Plantation of Local Medicinal Plants’ aimed to create an awareness among students and children to plant more and more trees to check pollution and global warming. Another objective was to tell the students about the usefulness of local medicinal plants of Assam as well as NE.
A quiz competition on nature and wildlife was also arranged on the occasion immediately after the plantation programme..The quiz was conducted by Phatik Deka and Abhijit Topadar both teachers of the school. Students of the school also performed cultural items on the occasion under the guidance of Radio and TV artist Renu Saikia.It is to be mentioned that Lokapriya Bordoloi Public School had arranged a workshop cum plantation programme at Pachim Silpota High School,10 km from Kalaigaon on May,3 2008 in order to create awareness among students and village people for the conservation nature and wildlife.

More than hundred wild elephants attacked the Central Nursery of forest department at Switch Gate near Compartment No.4.inside Khalingduar Reserve Forest in Udalguri district last night causing extensive damage to the buildings and walls under construction. A national level orientation workshop on transit of Venus, 2012 which had been started in Guwahati Planetarium on May 7 concluded on May 9. 50 numbers of participants from various districts of Assam and from other states of NE took part in the workshop for creating awareness among people regarding the safe awtching of the great celestial event on June 6 from Sun rise till 10.19 AM. In another tragic incident two youths namely-Indra Kumar Boro (20) son of Baneswar Boro and Amrit Boro (16) son of Khagen Chandra Boro of Teteliguri village under Kalaigaon police station died on spot on Saturday night at 1 AM at Bandhar Chowk near Kalaigaon.
