Students Mobilisation Initiatives for Learning through Exposure (SMILE) programme under Indo Global Social Service Society organised a one day programme on Youth and Democratic Governance at Pragati Sangha, Rangia on 10th April. The aim of the programme was to generate awareness amongst youth on the importance of democratic governance and how youth can take part in the good governance process in a country like India. Inaugurating the programme Mr. Pramod Boro, President of All Bodo Students Union appealed to the youths to work for building a just ad civil society where people can live in peace . Citing the example of poor governance in the Bodoland territorial Council he said that people’s participation is must for good governance in any democratic nation. The elements of democratic governance were presented by Ranjan K Baruah,an Ex-SMILERs from Guwahati. In his presentation Mr. Baruah showed some of the tools which can be used by the young people for building a good society. Speaking about the Right to Information Act he said that it is one of the democratic tool but it must be used and move ahead with the information obtained by filing the application under RTI Act. There was also presentation on the importance of Citizen Journalism with special reference with Assam Times. There were group presentations by the participants on the role of youth for democratic governance. The workshop was attended by college students, young professional apart from member from AASU, AJYCP and ABSU.

A NDFB-S rebel identified as Buddhiram Basumatary alias Birkw of Amteka Debrabil in Chirang district was apprehanded from Karigaon area in Kokrajhar by security forces belonging to the Army on Sunday morning. Congress is gearing up to form the Tiwa Autonomous Council after the ruling party won 15 out of 31 seats.
