The Assam Foundation of North America (AFNA) program 'Sponsor a Child' started off with a meeting at Snehalaya Guwahati. Debojit Bora of AFNA talked in detailed about this project. The meeting was attended by 1) Parijat Academy, 2) Asha Darshan-Tamulpur, 3) sSTEP, Society for Social Transformation and Environmental Protection 4) Atma Nirbhar-Ek Challange, Guwahati and 5) SHED , a rehab centers for Mentally Retarded & Autistic children in, Beltola , Guwahati . Bidyananda Barkakoty of Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters , Guwahati graced the meeting and offered all assistance for the successful completion of this project.
Also present was a four year old boy Bishal Acharya accompanied by his grand father Tarun Sarkar. This innocent child Bishal lost his father Sujit Acharya (age 31 yrs) during the Guwahati bomb blast on October 30, 2008 at Ganeshguri. Late Acharya was the only earning member of this lower middle class family. Bishal's mother, Reeta Acharya (age 26 years), a housewife is still in the grip of shock and trauma. Bishal will start his education from January 2009 and has taken admission in Ideal Nursery School in Fatasil Ambari area of Guwahati. AFNA is going to sponsor the educational cost of this child.

I do not have much knowledge about AFNA but I know a little about Sehalaya.... I know the organisatoin is doing a lot for the street children....I am just crazy to be a part of it.... its mean a lot for me....I also want to be part of Snehalaya..........

Yet another mild tremor jolted Assam on Sunday in the time of flood. The mild tremor of 4.3 struck at 9.55 in the morning creating panic among the people. Panic-stricken people in many flood relief camps started crying in fear. In Guwahati also, a section of the people housing in the high buildings came out to the streets as soon as they came to feel the earthquke.
Assam is in deep grip of the killer Japanese Encephalitis where the toll has gone up to 20. That too in Sivasagar district alone. The two month long kidnap drama in Goalpara district came to a tragic end when police recovered the bodies of two teachers on Sunday more than a month after they were kidnapped along the Assam-Meghalaya border. The bodies of the teachers namely Kamaleswar Rabha and Sarit Rabha on Saturday. They were kidnapped last month from Golpur area of the district. The teachers were kidnapped by local miscreants who shot them dead after their ransom demand was not met.
