Workers of the Bihubar Tea Garden under Sapekhati Mouza in Charaideo district staged a two-hour protest today, demanding urgent improvement of medical facilities in the estate. The agitation, spearheaded by the Assam Tea Tribes Students' Association (ATTSA), Sapekhati branch, highlighted issues such as lack of a permanent doctor, absence of ambulance services, and shortage of essential medicines.
Led by ATTSA leaders, workers raised slogans pressing for the appointment of doctors and GNM nurses, provision of medicines, creation of employment for educated unemployed youth, and proper ambulance facilities for emergency cases.
The protesters also submitted a five-point memorandum to the garden manager, Shashibhushan Srivastav, seeking resolution of the issues within a month. The memorandum was signed by ATTSA Sapekhati branch president Deb Gowala and secretary Uttam Kurmi.
Alleging violation of labour welfare provisions under the Factories Act, 1948 and the Plantation Labour Act, 1951, ATTSA members accused both the management and departmental officials of negligence towards workers’ welfare.
The demonstration, attended by over 100 workers and ATTSA activists including branch secretary Kamal Gor and organizational secretary Gobin Kurmi, concluded with a vow to continue the movement until the demands are fulfilled.
