Union Minister Inaugurates FM Transmitter at Akashvani Kokrajhar, Enhancing Connectivity in Bodoland Region

In a significant milestone for the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Railways, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, virtually inaugurated a 10 KW FM transmitter at Akashvani Kokrajhar from Guwahati, Assam, on Friday. The inauguration marks a major advancement in broadcasting services for Kokrajhar and its neighboring districts.

The ceremony witnessed participation from prominent leaders, including Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita, and State Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu. A simultaneous event held at Science College in Kokrajhar was attended by BTR Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, MPs Rwngwra Narzary and Joyanta Basumatary, BTR Executive Member Ukil Mushahary, Kokrajhar District Commissioner Masansa Magdalin Pertin, and officials from All India Radio (AIR).

Enhanced Broadcast Reach

The newly installed FM transmitter, constructed at a cost of ₹5.61 crore, will cover a 70-kilometer radius, benefiting Kokrajhar and surrounding districts such as Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Chirang, and Goalpara. Broadcasting at 102 MHz, the transmitter will deliver high-quality FM programs in Bodo and other regional languages, enriching the cultural and linguistic diversity of the area.

AIR Kokrajhar, established in 1999 with a 20-kilowatt medium wave transmitter, had previously introduced a 100-watt FM transmitter. However, the need for expanded coverage persisted. The new 10 KW transmitter fulfills this long-standing demand, promising improved access to educational, informational, and cultural content for the region.

A Historic Development for BTR

Describing the inauguration as a historic moment, BTR Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro expressed his satisfaction with the improved connectivity and broadcasting capabilities. He highlighted the transmitter's role in fostering regional development, cultural exchange, and enhanced accessibility to vital information.

“This FM transmitter will provide high-quality broadcasts, ensuring that news, information, and entertainment reach even the remotest areas. It represents a step towards greater inclusivity and connectivity for the people of Bodoland,” said Boro.

He further extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visionary initiative, emphasizing the transformative impact it will have on the region’s development.

Music and Harmony

Boro also expressed his optimism about the transmitter's ability to strengthen community engagement. “Peace is often found through music, and I’m confident that the new FM transmitter of Akashvani Kokrajhar will fill our radio waves with tunes of harmony and happiness,” he added.

This landmark initiative underscores the government’s commitment to bridging the communication gap in remote regions, fostering development, and promoting cultural harmony in BTR.
