Water Training Programme Commences at Dibrugarh University

Dibrugarh: The Seven-day Water Training Programme began at Dibrugarh University's Indira Miri Conference Hall on June 21, 2024. Organized by the Centre for Social Work Studies (CSWS), North-East India Water Talks (NEIWT), and NEADS, with support from the Heinrich Böll Stiftung - Delhi Regional Office, the event will run until June 27, 2024.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Monuj Dutta, followed by a background speech by K. K. Chatradhara of NEIWT. The inaugural session featured the University Anthem performed by CSWS students.

Dibrugarh University's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jiten Hazarika, inaugurated the training program. He emphasized the need for collaboration to address water-related challenges and highlighted campus issues such as water leakage and deforestation. Praising the Centre for linking academics with social needs, he suggested scaling up the training program to a full-fledged credit course on water.

Guest of Honour, Prof. Prabal Saikia, Chief Scientist at Assam Agricultural University-Zonal Research Station, North Lakhimpur, invoked the Assamese proverb "Praniye Pranir Pran" (water is life) to underscore the importance of water and advocated for equitable water governance. Prof. Saikia also released the book "Jalobayu Poriborton" (Climate Change) written by K. K. Chatradhara.

Dr. Ranjan K. Panda, Convenor of Water Initiatives, India, and Founder-Mentor of Youth4WaterIndia, delivered the keynote speech. He discussed the varying significance of water to different places, people, and generations, and emphasized the need to be aware of immediate water sources to address the water crisis.

The inaugural session was attended by faculty members, research scholars, students, and Civil Society representatives. Dr. Ansai Bathou Basumatary, Assistant Professor at CSWS, concluded the session with a vote of thanks.
