India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Gogoi tables deficit budget

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi tabled his Rs 1300 crore deficit budget on the floor of the assembly on Monday with a mixed bag of cheers and tears. Gogoi, who also holds the finance portfolio has proposed lift tax on molasses and hiked the same on on bidi and cigarette increased from 20% to 25%. He further hiked tax on brick kiln. Major setback for Paresh Baruah

Chetia extradition soon: Rajkhowa

Beware of bomb blast

Beware Guwahatians. Ulfa's Paresh Barua faction plans to blow up Guwahati. According to sources available with the government, a group of dreaded Ulfa militants has sneaked into the city with a plan to strike with a car bomb. The militants are believed to have used a black car to explode the powerful explosition. Police have beefed up security to thwart the attempt.

Poachers killed in encounter

Two poachers were killed and three others have been injured at an encounter in Kaziranga on Wednesday. The encounter took place in the Agaratali range in the wee hours. A gang of poachers started indiscriminate firing as they faced the forest guards patrolling on the spot. When the forest guards retaliated with firing, two poachers were killed on the spot. Major help for wage earners

The Assam government on Tuesday increased rate of wages, holidays, hours of work and conditions of skilled and unskilled workmen employed by contractors.As per the revision the rate of wages of an unskilled workmen with ITI Certificate will be Rs 277 per day, skilled workmen other than ITI Certificate holder will be paid Rs 175 and unskilled workmen Rs 169 per day.The rate of wages has been fixed in such a manner that no skilled workman gets less than the stipulated amount for working for a maximum 8 hours a day and no unskilled workmen gets less than Rs 169 per day.In case of overtime work, the wages will be twice the ordinary rate of wages for every work in excess of 8 hours a day and 48...
