India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. GMC polling underway

Amid tight security polling in the Guwahati civic bodies begins across the city. Over 7 lakh voters are free to decide on the fate of172 ward councillors along with 356 area sabha candidates. The polling started at 7 in the morning at 862 stations. Assamtimes team came to see huge queue of voters in Beltola, Paltanbazar, Chandmari areas even before the voting started. GMC polls on Wednesday

The strong room and counting hall at Sarusajai stadium in Guwahati will be under surveillance of CCTV camera.

Himanta seeks apology

Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeks public apology for the incident at the Mangaldoi civil hospital where four persons tested positive for HIV after they underwent blood transfusion. Sarma said that the Mangaldoi incident was very unfortunate and he had deep regret for it.

AGP leader to join Cong

In yet another major setback foi AGP, Apurba Bhattacharya will join Congress. Mr Bhattacharya will formally quit the party on Tuesday to join the ruling party in a day or two. CM asks Himanta to visit Mongoldoi

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to visit Mongoldoi immediately to assess the situation after the HIV infected blood transfusion scam at the civil hospital. The chief minister further has announced Rs 5 lakh help to the victims.

Verma new Chief Secy

PP Varma will be new chief secretary. “Today I am making it public. He will take charge after Das retires on the last day of this month," Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati Varma, a 1978 batch IAS officer, is currently the Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Social Welfare and Public Health Engineering Departments. The incumbent Naba Kumar Das, a 1976 batch IAS officer, will retire on June 30.
