India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Jagannath Mahanta passed away

Noted educationist and exponent of Sattriya culture Dr Jagannath Mahanta passed away after prolonged illness on Sunday.The end came at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Science, Vasant Kunj, in New Delhi at 4:40  in the afternoon where he was admitted a couple of weeks.A pall of gloom has descended in the entire Jhanji area as soon as the sad news spread like wildfires in the afternoon.Dr Mahanta, who taught Assamese in Jhanji Hemnath Sarma College in Jamuguri was known for his research works on Sattriyta culture.   

Security man surrenders finally

A security personnel deployed to guard a coal trader surrendered before on Sunday after he was accused in a shoot out case in Guwahati.The incident took place at Kundil Nagar in Beltola area where the security man fired upon two youths in front of the Prabhat Apartment in the evening.The two bike riders, manage to escape safely. But local residents in large number came out to the streets and demanded action against the security personnel.Local residents told Assam Times that the security personnel deployed to guard a coal businessman targeted the youths bereft of any reason.Later at 7-30 in the evening, he surrendered before the Basistha police.        ...

Syed khairul hassanNazira is throbbing with the preparations for the Rongali Bihu these days.Nazira Traders Association and Nazira Dikhow will observe the Bihu with all pomp and gaiety.The first day of the new Assamese calendar or the Bor Bihu would be celebrated with day long colourful cultural programme in front of the Nazira Natya Mandir.This is for the third time the trader body has jointly organized the event in association with the socio cultural organization.

Shoot out in Guwahati

Two persons sustained injury at an incident of shoot in Guwahati on Sunday.It took place at Kundil Nagar Beltola when a security guard of a coal trader shot at two local youths in front of Prabhat Apartment. Details are awaited.

BJP fields Saikia in Koliabor

After days of will-they-won’t-they, BJP has fielded Marinal Kumar Saikia in Koliabor in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7.Saikia’s name was finalized on Saturday evening after the Central leadership left it completely on the state leadership.Sources told Assam Times that the state leadership has hardly any interest in this constituency.President Sarbananda Sonowal urged the party leadership not to go for Koliabor where Chief Minister’s son Gaurav Gogoi is in the fray.That’s why, the Centre passed the buck on to Sonowal who had to announce Saikia’s name under pressure from the grass root level.

Modi to visit on March 27

In a major boost for BJP workers, prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will campaign in the state on March 27.During his day long visit to the state, the Gujarat Chief Minister is scheduled to attend three huge rallies in Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Lakhimpur.This would be his third visit to the state after he was nominated as the prime ministerial candidate.

Mongoldoi AGP candidate soon

The AGP has yet to finalise the candidate for Mongoldoi seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The opposition party has already announced the candidate for Jorhat, Nagaon, Koliabor, Lakhimpur and Dibrugarh seats.

AIUDF’s ticket impasse

AIUDF has not announced the second list of candidates on Saturday for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The party on Saturday morning decided to announce the names of the polls candidates in Silchar, Tezpur, Koliabor, Lakhimpur. But that has not happened.“We would announce the second list of the candidates very soon,” party leaders told Assam Times.The party is believed to have finalized Dr Parvez Ali Ahmed in Silchar, Mani Kumar Subba in Tezpur, Vijay Tiru in Koliabor.

We won’t halt: KMSS

KMSS on Saturday made it plain and simple that under no circumstances, they would halt their agitation for the landless lot.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, officials of the organization said that they would fight for land for the farmers in the forest and water bodies.They further said that they would intensify their demands for arrest of Chief minister and the revenue minister at a huge rally in Guwahati this months.
