India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Akhil Gogoi shifted to Titabor

Amid massive security, police shifted Akhil Gogoi to Titabor on Sunday a day after the court allowed transit remand of the KMSS president.At 11 in the morning, Gogoi was taken to Sarusajai to be airlifted to Titabor where police would grill him in connection with two cases pending against him.Gogoi was to be released on Saturday when on Friday he procured bail from Gauhati High Court in cases.Hundreds of KMSS workers staged dharna in front of the Guwahati Central Jail where he was lodged. But security forces did not allow them to meet Gogoi even when he was taken out of the Guwahati Central jail.   

Narrow escape for minister

Insurgent outfits seem to have stepped up activities in Karbi Anglong district in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.Minister Kahrsing Ingty has a narrow escape on Saturday evening when a hand made grenade exploded in Howraghat minutes before he arrived the stop.The explosion took place at Phubari in the hills district in front of a Congress leader Michale Bey who escaped unhurt.The grenade is believed to have been planted by KLNLA.    

Rajnath Singh holds 3 poll rallies

BJP president Rajnath Singh is on a day long visit to  Assam to hold three huge poll rallies on Saturday.Accompanied by state unit president Sarbananda Sonowal, Singh is scheduled to hold the first rally at Diphu at 11-30 in the morning. He would campaign for Joiram Englang who of late, joined the party.Then he would leave for Karimganj where he would address another poll rally at 2 in the afternoon. Then he would leave for Sivasagar to address his third poll rallies to campaign for Kamakhya Prasad Tasa.

EC raid at hotel with BK Handique

The Election Commission seems to have stepped up efforts to enforce model code of conduction for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Flying squads on Saturday suddenly conducted a raid at a hotel in Sivasagar town where Jorhat Congress candidate Biojoy Krishna Handique had a meeting with a few party men.But Handique said that he was holding a party meeting inside the hotel and the flying squad found nothing to incriminating materials to be seized.The raid was conducted hours after Handique distributed money to a section of tea community leaders. But the money in cash was removed minutes before the flying squads arrived in the hotel.  

Bangla daily closing

After Sokal Bela, yet another Bangla daily is closing. Its none other than Sangbad Lohori which is set to wrap up its existence from April 1. But the employees are at their wit’s end as soon as they received the notification by the management. Employees told Assam Times that they got to know the closure move  through the notification bearing No Ref no ST/63/14, dated 26 March 2014). The management, however, offered a month's salary to its employees as a token of support to them. But that’s too inadequate. The employees have appealed to the management to reconsider its decision. Chirang tense; curfew clamps

Apprehending law and order breakdown after the sensational rape and murder of a tribal girl in Boldia gaon, the Chirang district administration has clamped curfew on Saturday.The curfew in the entire area was imposed from 6-30 in the evening when some of the local residents tried to call it the beginning of the riot-rerun.A section of the local residents told Assam Times that a circle of the youths belonging to a particular community have been trying to foment trouble in the area.

Transit remand for Akhil Gogoi

Titabor police on Saturday got remand of Akhil Gogoi to be shifted from Guwahati in connection with three cases pending against the KMSS president. The court of Kamrup Chief Judicial magistrate allowed Titabor police to shift Gogoi from the Guwahati Central Jail after the transit remand was sought on Saturday.But hundreds of KMSS activists are staged dharna in front of the jail to prevent police from shifting their leader to Jorhat.
