New Assamese song releases

Rajveer Singh, a well-known singer and music director of Bollywood and Punjabi music, recently released a song titled ‘Mayabini’, which has been produced in the languages of Assamese and Punjabi, in a function held at the Guwahati Press Club. The function was graced by popular entrepreneur and socio-cultural activist Utpal Baniya, vice-president of Guwahati Press Club Dhaniram Kalita, and cultural activist Abhijit Sarma, among others.

Besides directing the music and penning the lyrics, Rajveer has also rendered the song. Produced by RS Production, ‘Mayabini’s musical arrangement is done by Sumit Acharya. Mixing and mastering has been done by Bikash Boruah. Besides Rajveer, the audio-visual song stars Bollywood actress Hina Kumari. The song also features many dancers from Assam and Mumbai. The choreography is done by Rajveer Singh himself. The song’s cinematography is by Souvik Sharma and is edited by Jeet Chaudhary.

Basically a resident of Punjab and Mumbai, Rajveer’s connection with the Assamese culture started years ago. Born and brought up in Guwahati when his parents shifted base to the city’s Kala Pahar locality for business purposes, Rajveer had shown a strong inclination towards music since very young. He listened to music that was indigenous to Assamese and Punjabi culture.

His musical journey has been quite hectic. He went on to work on a number of albums and music videos with various leading singers, besides doing concerts and live events. Over the years, Rajveer has contributed to both Punjabi and Assamese music. Rajveer has made a conscious attempt to take Bihu and other traditional songs to the international stage, demonstrating his respect and devotion to his homeland. Rajveer has sung and directed music with popular Bollywood singers like Guru Randhawa, Neha Kakkar, among others, and is also associated with the event management of Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan.

The function at the Guwahati Press Club was anchored by cine-journalist Hemanta Sarma.

At times, when they do speak up, they are often met by apathetic superiors and colleagues.  A healthy public awareness about the issue of sexual harassment may, perhaps, help prevent its recurrence, which prompted Partha Bharadwaj to produce an Assamese short film - ‘Not my Thing’, that celebrates the...

Even though you never went to film school, what inspired you to pursue this line of writing as well as directing indie films? My initial foray into the world of motion pictures began, I believe, when I was a little boy growing up in my hometown Duliajan in Upper Assam. My father, active with the Duliajan Film Society, back in the seventies, would have us kids watch wildlife movies playing off a 16mm projector at home. The cans, the screen, and the projector would occasionally be parked at our residence...
