At last the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi has realized that the situation in the state is not as he had dreamed so long. The opposition parties and various Non-governmental organizations had 'cried out' on explosive situation in the state frequently and tried to awake the administration for doing something to protect the lives and properties of the people, which passed through deaf ears and failed to give result. In fact the state has not enough security personnel which could be effective to protect the people from such incidents, but this was not realized by the government.
Earlier, on the complaints of the Human Rights Commission, regarding violation of human rights by Army and security forces, the CM, Gogoi took over the reign of Unified Command and propagated that there was peace prevailing throughout the state. But a number of incidents took place almost every day, which were ignored by the local police.
After hundreds of casualties and injuries to human beings by terrorists in the serial bomb blasts in the state on 30th October also the chief minister thought that the political parties were trying to campaign for ensuing Lok Sabha elections. The violence which broke out in Udalguri and Darrag districts on 3rd of last month did not prove eye-opener on the possible explosive situation. When different organizations and leaders visited the affected areas and saw the plight of the people and complained about the security lapses and submitted memoranda to Hon'ble Governor, Shiva Charan Mathur, then only the chief minister could realize the situation and planned a visit to the areas after a week of incidents taking place and announced relief works. He also announced to give compensation to the affected people. The NGOs busy in relief works complained that the relief works provided by the government were not satisfactory, but it did not improve the position.
In the meantime, leaders of various national and regional political parties tried to take the mileage of situation. Senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani and CPM leader Brinda Karat visited the places affected by serial blasts and demanded stringent laws to curb the terrorists activities. Despite the violence escalating in the state for continued one month during October 2008 and getting the clue of possible blasts from Army and the intelligence sources, the CM did not expect that the blasts would be 'so serious.' Even a lay man knows that such incidents do not take place by giving notice to someone.
Now, the chief minister has decided to recruit more security personnel and get a new force to fight terrorism. If this decision would have been taken earlier there was possibility of saving so many lives and the people would not have come on roads demanding dismissal of the government. The people of the state feel neglected by the Union government only because of the poor leadership of the state. With the visit of the Central leaders to the state and the region, it has been proved that the state and region is not represented properly by those on whom the people have trust.
