Journalist Hiren Phukan to attend GPC program

A senior Assamese journalist, who has worked for many years in Singapore will interact with the city based scribes on next Friday (25 January 2019). Hiren Phukan, now settled in the port city State, will answer queries from the members of Guwahati Press Club (GPC) through the video conferencing facility in the program starting at 3 pm.

Hails from Uzanbajar locality of Guwahati, Phukan used to work for The Straits Times, Singapore's leading English language daily till 2005. Earlier he was associated with The New Straits Times, Malaysia’s premier daily. After two years he left Kuala Lumpur for Singapore in 1982 and since then he is living there.

Prior to it, Phukan worked for The Statesman, Kolkata for 13 years from 1967. An MA in Economics from Gauhati University, he started his career in journalism with The Assam Tribune in 1964. Graduated from Cotton College, Phukan completed his school education in St Edmund’s School, Shillong. Now he keeps busy himself with freelance editing & writings.

GPC member-journalists are requested to participate in the program.

Senior journalist Hiten Mahanta passed away on Saturday at GNRC (six mile) hospital. The end came at 7.25 in the morning at GNRC Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.Mahanta suffered multiple head injuries as he fell on the road on the morning hours of August 5 at his home locality of Chunchali in the city. Senior journalist Hiten Mahanta paased away on Saturday at GNRC (six mile) hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on August 5 and continued to be critical. His last came on 7.30 am of 29 August 2015.
