Hon'ble President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil this morning presented the Nirmal Gram Puraskar to among the winners of the 13 eastern region states of the country, which include the NE states, West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Chattisgarh and Jharkhand for Panchayti Raj Institutions achieving full Sanitation Coverage instituted by Rajiv Gandi National Drinking Water Supply under the Ministry of Rural Development and Public Health Engineering Department of Government of Assam at the Karamabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Satdium at Sarusajai Guwahati. The Nirmal Gram Puraskar Function was also attented by Govenor of Assam S C Mathur, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Union Minister for Rural Development; Govt. of India Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Union MoS Rural Development; Govt. of India Shri Chandra Sekhar Saha and Mr. Rihon Daimary Minister for Public Health Engineering Department Govt. of Assam.
The awards, meant for the gram panchayats, anchalik panchayats, zilla panchayats and states, have been instituted to motivate the people of the rural areas to help the country achieve the total sanitation goal by 2012. In the international sphere, the Millennium Goal of the United Nations has set 2015 as the time limit for covering the entire population under the Total Sanitation Campaign.
