JPC reschedules Assam hearing in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Joint Parliamentary Committee set up to study the issues centering around the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has rescheduled the April 12 hearing for the organizations from Assam in New Delhi to April 17.

According to information, the House panel headed by Rajendra Agarwal has rescheduled the hearing acting on the suggestions to avoid the clash with the Rongali Bihu.  

 The panel has dozens of applications and memorandums but has figured out only 28 of these to be invited for hearing in the capital which runs into a hail of controversy. These include the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU).

 

Many organizations have opposed the hearing in Delhi and demands it in Guwahati instead. Some other organizations and individuals want the hearing to be boycotted in the capital.  

Meanwhile, the Nagorikotta Aain Songkhudhoni Birodhi Manch has organized a sit in at Dispur on April 12 in protest against the hearing in New Delhi.

Strict vigil and security in place for R-Day

A round the clock-vigil is in place in all district to thwart any ULFA attempt in the run up to the Republic Day slated for January 26. Security forces have been deployed in vital public places including oil and gas installations. Massive protest over fake encounter in Tinsukia

Massive protest hits in Tinsukia district over allegations of fake encounter where security forces claimed to have killed a youth. IED recovered in Kakopothar

In another incident, police recovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) from the kitchen garden of a house in Hahakati area under Kakopothar police station in Tinsukia district. The IEDs were buried in the garden.  Police said the IEDs, each weighing around five kg, were recovered following a tip-off. The owner of the house, Biswajit Moran, has been picked up for questioning.

Youth killed in Tinsukia firing

Security forces claimed to have killed an ULFA militant in Tinsukia district  on Saturday. Identified as Lalit Moran, the local youth was suspected to be a militant belonging to the anti-talk faction during a joint operation launched by the Army and police in Duwarmara jungle. Army and police had launched the operation after getting intelligence input regarding the presence of a group of armed men in the area.  But a section of local resident alleged it a fake encounter where the innocent youth was killed.

Aaranyak expresses deep concern at the continued rhino poaching

Aaranyak has expressed its deep concern at the continued poaching of rhinos in different parts of Assam. In first two weeks of the new year already rhinos are poached in Kaziranga, Orang and Manas NP.
