AGARTALA: Polling is over in Tripura. The fate of 292 candidates contesting for 59 out of 60 assembly seats are sealed in EVMs who would be opened for counting on March 3.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the initial turn out in the evening while the real figure will be published by Monday since the EVMs have yet to reach the strong rooms. Many voters were seen waiting in queue till 4 in the afternoon to exercise their franchise suggesting a huge turn out in the assembly polling in 3 417 booths which started at 7 in the afternoon.
Many poll candidates were seen visiting the booths amid tight security which was why, the entire exercise passed off by and large peacefully.
Altogether 25,36,589 voters exercised their franchise at 3,417 polling booths to decide on the fate of 292 candidates from 7 in the morning which ended at 4 in the afternoon. The counting would take place from 8 in the morning on March 3 simultaneously with Nagaland and Meghalaya where polling is taking place on February 27.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday moved Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in the construction of three dams on the upstream of the Brahmaputra. In a letter to the Prime Minster, Gogoi pointed out that though the Chinese Government had given assurance that they would take care of the interest of downstream areas, the State Government has apprehensions that it might affect the State.Gogoi in his letter said that the ‘entire Assam economy East is dependent on the Brahmaputra and that the construction of three new dams on the upstream of the river might affect the interest of the region in the downstream areas.

Customs department officials in Guwahati seized 20,000 bottles of phensedyl cough syrup from a truck in on the way to Dhaka via Agatala. In a bizarre incident that rocked the entire state, two criminals broke into the Morigaon district Chief Judicial Magistrate's court and stole files relating to criminal cases on Thursday night. Police arrested the duo on Friday.The windows were broken and 30 files were stolen to be thrown away in a nearby drain. One of the criminals Bimal Hazarika, however, left behind his wallet from where his driving license was found by police this morning. Police immediately tracked him along with his accomplice Asim Bordoloi and arrested them. The 30 files were recovered from the drain and returned to the court.

The Centre has raised the margin money for khadi and village industries from Rs 66 cr to Rs 100 cr for the next financial year 2013-2014.This was confirmed by none other than Union Minister of State for MSME (Independent) KH Muniyappa in Guwahati.
