AGARTALA: Polling is underway in Tripura on brisk note from 7 in the morning to decide on the fate of 59 legislators in the 60 member assembly on Sunday. According to state election authority, the polling is peaceful where 2,536,589 people are exercising their franchise at 3,714 booths from 7 in the morning.
The voters in large number thronged the assigned booths much ahead of the time. Altogether 47,803 voters are exercising their franchise for the first time to ascertain the fate of 292 candidates including 23 women. A record 50,000 para-military and other state security personnel are in place to ensure free and fair polling across the state apart from deploying two air teams for conducting surveillance by helicopters.
Congress candidates are contesting in all 59 seats while BJP has fielded 51 leaving others to the allies Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT). The ruling CPM is contesting in 57 seats leaving the remaining seats to RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI. The EVMs would be opened on March 3 for counting simultaneously with Meghalaya and Nagaland where pollings are slated for February 27.
