KOHIMA:Nagaland chief Minister TR Zeliang said the north eastern state is in the dire need of permanent peace which is possible only after the solution of the decade old issues. Addressing a public meeting in Akulu town on Sunday, the Chief Minister said that solution to the protracted Naga political issue must be finalised at the earliest time possible for the sake of peace and harmony of all the Nagas.
He said, "Solution is for all the Nagas and it must arrive for the sake of permanent peace in the land. 'And that is why Solution first and then election,' he stated.Inviting all Naga political groups to come together in unison for a final settlement, Zeliang believed that the land of the Nagas would be among the best in the world once underground movement was resolved. 'We are second to none and given the opportunity, Nagas have the capability to compete at the global level,' he added.

Barring a few stray incidents polling for the first phase of panchayat election are over registering a huge turn out in 8 districts on Wednesday.The polling began at 7 in the morning and ended at 3 in the afternoon where 28,680 candidates are in the fray in eight districts. Among them, 643 have contested for the post of zilla parishad member, 2,801 for anchalik panchayat member, 3,099 for gaon panchayat president's post and 22,137.The first phase include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Kaliabor, Nagaon Sadar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts.

ULFA has owned up the responsibility of the strike in oil pipeline at Makum on Tuesday. The first phase will decide the fate of altogether 28,680 candidates in eight districts.
Of them, 643 candidates will contest for the post of Zilla Parishad member, 2,801 for Anchalik Panchayat member, 3,099 candidates for Gaon Panchayat president's post and 22,137 candidates filed their nominations for Gaon Panchayat membership.
First phase will include Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Kaliabor, Nagaon Sadar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts. The counting of votes would take place on February 14 and February 15.
