GUWAHATI: Amid the crucial probe into the APSC scam, the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail petition moved by chairman Rakesh Paul who has been languishing in jail for the last several months.
A disappointed Paul and his legal team now has no option to pin hopes on the Supreme Court for respite. His lawyers, sources, say are moving the apex court challenging the ruling on Tuesday.
A division bench of the court ruled that since the probe into the nefarious cash for job scam has reached a crucial stage, the bail is not advisable for the chairman.
Paul who two months back procured bail from the Supreme Court was rearrested acting on a fresh bribery case registered against him in Bhangagarh police outpost.
Sources told Assam Times that Paul is moving the country's apex court challenging the High Court's ruling on Tuesday.

The Assam government is clearing the decks for updating NRC from December. Disclosing this at a press conference in Dispur, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the central funds for NRC works would be available.Notably, a Supreme Court instruction has forced the Centre to clear the fund for an updated set of NRC while Dispur is in a process to resume the work. Four persons were killed when a vehicle carrying them to Guwahati collided its head on a scorpio vehicle on its way to Dhemaji on Thusday. The head-on-collision took place in the wee hour on the National Highway 52 at Kocharigaon. Four person on the Guwahati-bound Alto car died on the spot while those inside the Scorpio vehicle were injured to be sent to the hospital.
Yet another alleged incident of gangrape struck Guwahati. The main accused is in police custody. The incident took place at Maligaon where three youths allegedly gangraped and assaulted a 20 year old girl under the flyover at 11 at night. Local residents rescued the girl and caught the main accused who was handed over to the police. But the two others managed to flee from the spot. Later the girl was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College. Apart from interrogating the accused, police are waiting for the medical report to confirm it a case of gangrape.
Two back to back earthquakes struck Assam on Wednesday leaving 2 dead in Golaghat besides demolishing several school buildings in the district. The earthquake measuring 5.5 in the Rickhter scale originated at Borpothar along Golaghat-Karbi Anglong district border at 9.48 in the morning. Properties worth one crore reduced to ashes when a Guwahati-based bar caught fire on Tuesday. The incident took place at the Midtown Bar Christian Basti probably because of electrical short circuit at 5.30 in the evening. Fire tenders reached the spot in time but it had to fight for almost 3 hours to bring the situation under control. Investigation is going on.
