Decks are cleared for upgradation of three colleges to universities as Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi gave his assent to the bill which aimed at starting the academic functions of Madhabdev University of Lakhimpur, Bhattadev University of Barpeta and Rabindranath University of Hojai.
According to an official statement, Principal Secretary of Higher Education Department Ajay Tewari and Principal Secretary to Finance Department Dr. Ravi Kota met Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhavan and briefed the Governor about the new legislations of the state.
Mukhi also approved the setting up of a new university namely Majuli University of Culture at Majuli. It may be noted that Assam Legislative Assembly had already passed the bill to set up a cultural university in Majuli and to upgrade three existing colleges in Lakhimpur, Barpeta and Hojai districts to universities.
Moreover, an amendment was also made in Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University of Nalbari and Assam Science and Technology University, Guwahati to make Governor as the Chancellor of these universities. It may also be mentioned that prior to the amendment Chief Minister of the state was the Chancellor of these universities.
The Governor also gave his assent for the PRANAM Bill, 2017 which was passed in the assembly unanimously and made it compulsory for the state government employees to take care of their dependent parents and disabled siblings sans any income source with immediate effect.
