The pomp and gaiety that gripped Assam and Meghalaya for Durga puja along with other parts of the country came to an end on Saturday evening as the idols of the goddess of strength were immersed in water with traditional religious fervour.
The devotees in many places including Guwahati and Shillong took out huge profession from 10 in the morning on the way to the rivers and water bodies for immersion.
Two prominent inland water transport stops on the river Brahmaputra in Guwahati turned into a sea of humanity as thousands of people on both sides of the city roads pulled out of their homes to catch a glimpse of the trucks carrying the idols for immersion at Pandu and Kashamari.
The Guwahati district administration made special arrangement to facilitate the immersion ceremony smoothly. The immersion which begin from 11 in the morning is continuing till 9 in the evening.
