The sorry state of affairs of most of the roads of Udalguri district speaks volume of the real development in Hagrama Mahillary's much hyped model BTC . The activists of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) while resenting and expressing concern over poor road communication staged protest programme at Tangla-Kathalguri-Harisinga PWD road and demanded immediate renovation of the the road along with renovation of historic Mekenzi road on Tuesday. The protestors while slamming the BJP led coalition government lashed out at Panery legislator Kamali Basumatari, Udalguri MLA and Cabinet Minister Rihon Daimari.
Addressing the protestors Saiful Haque Secretary AASU Udalguri said," The change in guards at Dispur has not changed the fate of the people of the region.
People left with poor road communication which is vital for the development of a region. The Tangla- Harisinga road was started years back but non completion of the road has drawn strong resentment.
While the dilapidated condition of the historic Mekenzi road credited with being the oldest road of undivided Darrang district, which was once constructed by the British sometime in 1860, Mekenzi Road links Kalaigaon town with Paneri, Bengbari, Hatigarh and several northern tea gardens of Udalguri since the 19th century. Though under the supervision of the State PWD, the road was repaired last in 2004 but presently the condition of the surface communication link is presently so pathetic that people hardly walk on it, not to speak of vehicular traffic, the road has lost all its sheen.
Though the road distance is only 17 kms from Kalaigaon town to Bengbari, it is bizarre that people's voice to repair the same has not reached the government's ear for the last 12 years.
