Bohag Bihu, the much vaunted festival of the Assamese kicks off on Friday amid no less traditional pomp and gaiety across the state marking an entry into a new Assamese calendar year. The week long festivity began early in the morning with Goru Bihu, where the cow was bathed in pool and rivers to be worshipped.
Traditional Assamese sweets and pastries are flooding every household to be served to the near and dear ones. Dressed in traditional attire people in the open spaces are busy with egg fights other games to mark the annual spring festival.
With drums and cymbals, flute and buffalo horn pipes the young boys and girls are performing door to door Bihu Huchori wishing divine bliss for the people. The elders in many places are thronging the temple and Namghar premises on the occasion.
Cultural functions are lined up in the rural and urban areas alike to entertain the people in the festive season. Assam Governor B Purhit, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with many other parties, organizations and individuals have wished the people on the occasion of Rongali Bihu.
