Couple half buried in Lakhimpur

A group of villagers in Lakhimpur district inflicted inhuman torture upon a couple charging them with practising black magic hardly a week after a couple were killed in Kokrajhar sending shockwaves across the state.

The incident took place at Moinahuri in Dhakuakhana where a group of villagers dragged Brojen Doley and his wife to a sandpit to be beaten up before allowing them to be remained half buried alleging witch craft.

Acting on complaints police came and rescued the couple and registered a case. But by then the villagers fled from the spot.

“The incident took place in the midnight where some youths picked up the couple and brought near a jungle where they were severely assaulted for witch craft. They denied the charges. But the perpetrators refused yo listen to them. Then we called up the Dhakuakhana police who later rescued the couple,” said a local resident of Moinaguri village where it took

Guwahati had a narrow escape from a huge explosion when police recovered a powerful bomb on Tuesday morning in the city.The bomb was planted inside an abandoned bag which was kept in front of the Refinery Gate in Noonmati. On spotting the suspicious object panic stricken local residents called up police in the morning. Noonmati police arrived in the spot with sniffer dogs. Bomb disposal squad arrived on the spot and defused the bomb.
Two policemen have been injured when suspected ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Jorhat on Tuesday.The explosion took place on Friday wee hours at Kenduguri areas near the town. Sensation prevails in Bagsa district of Assam on Sunday a day after four teenagers were killed in Borbori area forcing police to step up operation to nab the culprits.The incident took place at Geruwa Aashram village on Saturday midnight when unidentified miscreants sprung upon the four youths with sharp weapons. The Assam Secretariat and other offices have been declared as a protected area. The order was issued by Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri, who directed that none except bonafide residents and public servants of the secretariat and other offices could enter the area without prior permission. According to an official statement, the working hours at the secretariat and all government offices on all working days would be from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm without break from March one to September 30, 2013.
