The Sarbananda Sonowal Government is facing no less flak a day after it shunted Mukul Saikia, a senior police officer who has been leading the probes into a number of sensational corruption cases.
Saikia, who headed the anti corruption and vigilance cell was transferred and reposted as border SP at a time when his probe into a few multi crore scam reached the crucial stage.
According to sources, the move for his new assignment was finalized a couple of weeks after the probe into the multi crore GMDA scam gathered steam where the names of a circle of powerful bureacrats and businessmen emerged. These include a senior political leader.
It was Saikia, who grilled three former Congress ministers in the Rs 2000 crore scam in the social welfare department. They are Ajanta Neog, Akon Bora, Gautom Roy. This was to be followed by the interrogation of four powerful IAS officers.
Apart from it, the senior police officer was probing the APSC scam where chairman along with two members were put behind the bars. Scams in education and forest departments were pending for thorough investigation. But he received carte blanche.
His transfer was executed soon after he gathered some crucial evidence in the initial stage of probe into the GMDA scam.
Many parties, organizations and individuals on Thursday threatened to move the court for intervention if Saikia is not restored to carry forward the probes.
Saikia, was probing into the allegations against Rakesh Paul during the Congress regime prepared a detail list of the disproportionate assets belonging to the APSC member and this was followed by his transfer. But the erstwhile government restored him after the court intervention.
